Dear Sir or Madam:
Chris has been a volunteer youth coach at the Oswegoland Park District since August 2008. Over the course of this time,
Chris has coached 17 soccer seasons (spring and fall season each year) coaching players ranging from 3 years old to 6th
graders. Not only is his volunteerism respected and appreciated through coaching our community youth, but Chris has
shared his passion and love for the game to over 430 community players! Many seasons, Chris has juggled coaching
more than one of his kids in the program; some seasons, coaching four of his kids during one season. One would think
that taking on this much could minimize the output one could and would give. With Chris we saw the opposite. He
seems to thrive on running from field to field, balancing rosters, teaching community youth about sportsmanship, rules
of the game, explaining the importance of being a part of team, and being a reputable teammate. Every game day, he
has a smile on his face and is ready to give 100% to the team he is about to coach. His charisma and positive attitude
validates that he really loves teaching Oswegoland kids and he would jump through any hoop to make it all work.
As a volunteer coach in a youth sports program, in a recreational league such as ours, there are many challenges that
coaches face. Not only are coaches expected to teach players about the game, but teach players who are new to the
game, of varying abilities and experience, to players who learn in various ways, and to put all these pieces together on
game day . Chris’s positive attitude, ways of teaching and explaining, persistence in being a quality coach and leader, all
added to his passion of teaching the game, he is able to reach each and every one of his players. Kids learn, interpret,
and apply teachings at different rates, but there is definitely personal development in each player he teaches. He does
all of this for his teams, season after season, game after game, practice after practice, while making sure his players are
having fun, as well as himself! In the world of youth sports we live in today, fun is taken out of the equation much too
frequently, but Chris excels at applying it to his team philosophy.
I have come to know Chris over the last 4 years as the Athletic Supervisor at the Oswegoland Park District. He is a
familiar face that returns each season, ready for action, without hesitation. He is a volunteer coach that we welcome
back. I have joked in the past about what he would do with his time if he wasn’t running to and from soccer fields, with
kids and equipment in tow. His response, “I love it. I wouldn’t have it any other way.” I truly feel that was a sincere reply
and he wouldn’t change a thing. Although Chris’ teachings have been on a volunteer basis, I feel his commitment to his
kids, players, and community speaks volume in regards to his want and love to teach and make a difference.
Sincerely,
Abbie Frederick
