Synthesis
?
-bringing together of
materials from
different sources, and
the creation of an
integrated whole.
Types of Synthesis:
1. Explanatory Synthesis
- helps readers understand a topic.
Primary aim is to present facts, objectively.
2. Argument Synthesis
- the purpose is to present your own
viewpoint.
Categories of Sources: Fraenkel (2015)
1. Documents- Includes written or printed
materials that have been produced, such as
reports, books, records, diaries, etc. May
be published/ not.
2. Numerical Records- separate type of
source/ a subcategory of documents.
This includes any type of numerical data
in printed form; test scores, census
reports, school budgets, etc.
Categories of Sources: Fraenkel (2015)
3. Oral Statements- May include stories,
myths, tales, songs, chant, and other form
of oral expressions. These materials leave
a record for future generations.
4. Relics- Formal types of historical
sources. These are objects where
physical characteristics provides info.
about the past (furniture artworks,
clothing, etc.)
How to Write a Synthesis:
1. Consider your purpose in writing.
2. Select & read carefully your sources,
according to your purpose.
3. Formulate a thesis. It is the main ideas
that you want to present in your synthesis.
4. Decide how you will use your source
materials & take down notes.
5. Develop an organizational plan acc. to your
thesis.
6. Write the first draft of your synthesis, following
your organizational plan.
7. Revise your synthesis.
Techniques for Writing a Synthesis:
1. Summary- Simplest way of organizing a
synthesis. Listing one after the other the
most relevant information & sources you
gathered.
2. Example or Illustration- It is an
illustration that you have included in your
review. Credits is needed.
Ex. Conceptual framework.
Techniques for Writing a Synthesis:
3. Two (or more) Reasons- State your
synthesis, then give reasons why it is true.
Needs to be supported by evidence from
your data & sources.
4. Comparison & Contrast- Examining
two subject or data in terms of one
another. Comparison considers
similarities, highlights differences.
