Huang Taisheng pioneered the art of leaf engraving after years of effort. He was inspired to try engraving on leaves after seeing a moth-eaten leaf whose veins resembled a map of China. Through experimentation with biological experts, he developed a special solution to soak leaves in order to make them suitable for engraving delicate patterns. The process involves soaking leaves in solution followed by dozens of additional steps like trimming, hammering, and bleaching. This treatment makes the engraved leaves flexible, waterproof and pest-resistant while preserving them for a long time. Huang's leaf engravings are collected in museums worldwide and depict historical figures, calligraphy, Buddhism and other themes.
