LA BELLEZA ENCERRADA, DE FRA ANGELICO A FORTUNY
La exposición reúne 281 obras de las colecciones del Museo del Prado que tienen como denominador común su pequeña dimensión y unas características especiales de riqueza técnica, preciosismo, refinamiento del color y detalles escondidos que invitan a la observación cercana de estos cuadros de gabinete, bocetos preparatorios, pequeños retratos, esculturas y relieves. La mitad de las obras expuestas no se han visto con regularidad en el Prado en los últimos años. Conservadas en los almacenes o depositadas en otras instituciones, han cedido el paso con humildad a otras más famosas y populares que han brillado sin perder nunca su luz en la colección permanente, aunque no por ello son menos interesantes ni menos bellas. La singularidad del Museo reside en la elevada calidad de sus colecciones, en el sorprendente buen estado de conservación de sus obras y en la variedad de lo acumulado a lo largo de los siglos por los sucesivos monarcas y por las adquisiciones conseguidas por quienes tomaron el relevo del enriquecimiento artístico de la institución desde el siglo XIX.
Las obras expuestas se ordenan a lo largo de diecisiete salas en las que se da prioridad a la cronología, a través de un intenso recorrido que comienza a fi nes del siglo XIV y principios del siglo XV en Italia, Francia y los Países Bajos, y culmina a fi nes del siglo XIX en España. Ese concentrado paseo sin escapatoria aviva en el espectador la conciencia del paso del tiempo, que une el pasado con el presente y descubre, además, la singularidad y riqueza del Museo del Prado actual. Por otra parte, las relaciones entre las expresiones artísticas de unos y otros países revelan similitudes y divergencias técnicas y estilísticas de la mano de artistas del máximo relieve; los diálogos entre las obras hablan de las influencias ajenas o de la reafi rmación del sentimiento de lo propio. En determinados casos, los temas toman la iniciativa y se enfoca con mayor intensidad lo representado que a los artistas y sus estilos particulares, invitando al espectador a refl exionar sobre el modo en que los pintores del norte y los del sur entienden una misma iconografía, en una visión totalizadora del arte europeo y de su significado desde la Edad Media y el Renacimiento, a través del Barroco y del rococó, hasta el naturalismo que dará paso al siglo XX.

JAPONISMO, FASCINACIÓN POR EL ARTE JAPONÉS
El Japonismo, una de las expresiones artísticas más ricas y poliédricas del siglo XIX, es un movimiento artístico muy conocido internacionalmente. El interés por Japón se extendió por toda Europa durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX gracias a iniciativas de alcance internacional tan influyentes como el establecimiento y los productos art nouveau de Siegfried Bing, que dejó su impronta en la obra de artistas del impresionismo, del posimpresionismo, del simbolismo e incluso de la vanguardia.
El japonismo en España nació hacia la década de 1870 y tuvo su periodo de mayor influencia a finales de siglo y alrededor de los grandes artistas del Modernismo, con una gran riqueza de propuestas estéticas y con obras tan diversas como las de Marià Fortuny, Pablo Picasso o Joan Miró. En este sentido, España, y especialmente Cataluña, dispone de un corpus de obras japonistas muy abundante, pero todavía muy poco conocido.

Obras prestadas desde todo el mundo
Los 50 lienzos reunidos para la ocasión ocupan algunas de las salas más espaciosas de la pinacoteca londinense, utilizadas normalmente para albergar la colección permanente. Un escenario inmejorable para contemplar toda la suntuosidad pictórica, la espectacularidad temática y la destreza técnica de un artista considerado por Nicholas Penny, director de la National Gallery, como «uno de los mejores pintores de la Historia». «Veronese pinta con gran rapidez y mucha confianza en su trazo porque emplea sobre lienzo la técnica que adquirió pintando frescos», analizaba Salomon, «curator» en la actualidad de la Frick Collection de Nueva York, este martes durante la presentación de la exposición.
Cuarenta de las obras maestras expuestas ellas han sido prestadas por museos y colecciones de todo el mundo: un tercio provienen de Estados Unidos, un tercio de Italia y el tercio restante de otros países europeos, incluido España. La pieza más valiosa es el «Martirio de San Jorge», una espectacular representación de 4,3 por tres metros de los instantes anteriores al martirio del patrón de Inglaterra. Se trata de la primera vez que el cuadro es prestado por la iglesia de San Jorge en Braida (Verona), aunque su viaje a Londres es en realidad el segundo al extranjero después de que Napoléon se lo llevara prestado como botín de guerra, aunque luego lo devolvió.

febrero y reúne 113 obras. Entre los artistas presentes en esta ocasión se encuentran desde los
iniciadores de los estudios al óleo al aire libre, como Pierre‐Henri de Valenciennes o Thomas Jones,
hasta artistas como Turner, Constable, Corot, Rousseau, Courbet, Daubigny, Monet, Sisley, Renoir,
Seurat, Van Gogh o Cézanne, entre otros muchos nombres imprescindibles. Con este amplio elenco,
la muestra aborda el fenómeno de la pintura al óleo al aire libre en su conjunto, como una práctica
artística que ofrecía nuevas e insospechadas posibilidades a la representación del paisaje, y que
revolucionó la pintura del siglo XIX.
Analizar el papel de la pintura al aire libre como motor de la renovación plástica del siglo XIX es el objetivo principal de esta exposición. En general, tendemos a relacionar la pintura al aire libre con el impresionismo pero, cuando Monet, Renoir, Sisley o Pissarro empezaron a exponer sus obras en el estudio del fotógrafo Nadar, en 1874, la pintura en plein air llevaba ya casi un siglo de desarrollo. Los estudios al aire libre constituyeron, de hecho, parte fundamental de la formación del pintor de paisajes desde fines del siglo XVIII. Más tarde, convertida en eje del naturalismo, su potencialidad renovadora se extendió hasta finales del siglo XIX. La muestra reunirá alrededor de 100 obras en un arco cronológico que va desde 1780 hasta 1900, aproximadamente; desde los iniciadores del paisaje al aire libre, como Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes y Thomas Jones, a artistas como Turner, Constable, Corot, Rousseau, Courbet, Daubigny y todos los grandes maestros del impresionismo, hasta llegar al cambio de siglo con Van Gogh o Cézanne, entre otros muchos nombres imprescindibles. Suzdal (Су́здаль) is a historic small town in Vladimir Oblast east of Moscow Russia, about 25 km north of Vladimir. It was once the capital of several Russian principalities. After the Revolution that took place in 1917, Christmas was banned throughout Russia, along with other religious celebrations. So celebrating New Year became a sort of "replacement" for it. Only after 75 years, in 1992, Christmas became openly observed. Russian Orthodox Church celebrates Christmas on January 7th, in accordance with the old Julian calendar.
