Best Foods to Eat Before You
Workout

Food for Fuel
In order to have a successful workout, it’s important that your body
receives key nutrients prior to exercise.
Some people, especially if they’re trying to lose weight, tend to skip the
calories before they workout.
This tactic is not only unsafe, but it will decrease the effectiveness of your
workout.
However, this isn’t to say that you should eat anything before you workout -
there are certain foods to keep in mind that will help fuel your body and
keep you energized.
Here’s a list of what kinds of food you should be eating before you exercise:
#1: Bananas
Bananas are filled with potassium
and carbohydrates, which assist with
nerve and muscle function.
An article published in Men’s Fitness
Magazine references Dr. Louise
Burke, head of Sports Nutrition at the
Australian Institute of Sport, who
said, “they’re nature’s
PowerBar,” (Men’s Fitness, Best Pre-
Workout Foods) when asked if
bananas were a good pre-workout
snack.
#2: Wholegrain Bread
Wholegrain bread is next on the list, providing an
excellent source of carbohydrates.
Dr. Burke went on to say that wholegrain bread “has
flexible partners” and one should “top it off with
jam or honey for more fuel or sliced up hard-boiled
eggs for high-quality protein,” (Men’s Fitness, Best
Pre-Workout Foods).
Always remember, that eating before working out
prevents your blood sugar levels from dropping, and
therefore will help you from feeling light-headed
and fatigued.
When it comes to carbohydrates, you should be
eating around 30 grams a day, but try to get them in
before your workout so you can be sure that your
body will be properly energized.
#3: Fruit Smoothies
Another recommendation from Men’s
Fitness Magazine is to indulge in a fruit
smoothie an hour before your workout,
which contain both carbohydrates and
protein.
Dr. Burke notes that fruit smoothies are
“easy to consume and are rapidly
digested,” (Men’s Fitness, Best Pre-
Workout Foods).
Many people make the mistake of
exchanging carbs for protein before a
workout, but this method does not work
because protein takes a while to break
down and probably won’t become fuel in
time for your workout.
