Just for curiosity I typed the word 'leadership' on
Google search engine. Behold! I had about
48,90,00,000 results in 0.18 seconds. We are
living in a world of cut-throat competition, aren't we?
Survival of the fastest and smartest is the mantra of this
world. Fast and Fury are the catchwords, 'instance' is
the order of the day. Being a leader becomes
indispensable in such a situation. What does it mean to
be a leader in today's world? Ability to think
innovatively, creatively and execute persuasively and
productively faster than the others. It all sounds
corporate, doesn't it? The bookstore shelves today
abound with leadership books and manuals (“how to
become effective leader in fifteen days”).The very fact
that the Management Schools and IITs are
mushrooming in the country shows the dearth for
genuine leaders in the
country.
Today anyone
who has money, muscle
power, or political clout
considers him/herself a
leader. 'Command and
control' is their only
method of leadership. If
anyone opposes, he/she
i s s i l e n c e d o r
bulldozed. I am sure
you can think of
umpteen number of such instances in every arena of
ourcountry.
In such a situation what is our Jesuit
contribution to Leadership? Chris Lowney, a former
American Jesuit, in his book 'Heroic Leadership'
mentions four important Jesuit leadership traits which
couldbecomeamodelformodernleadership.
Our Jesuit training should help us realize these four
aspects. Firstly we're all leaders, and we are leading all the
time, well or poorly. Secondly Leadership springs from
within. It's about who I am as much as what I do. Thirdly
Leadership is not an act. It is my life, a way of living. Lastly I
never complete the task of becoming a leader. It is an
ongoingprocess.
Four principles stand out in Jesuit leadership. The
Jesuits becomeleadersby
 Understanding their strengths, weaknesses, values,
andworldview(self-awareness)
 Confidently innovating and adapting to embrace a
changingworld(ingenuity)
 Engaging others with a positive, loving attitude
(Love)
 E n e r g i z i n g
themselves and
others through
heroic ambitions
(Heroism)
We need to ask
ourselves how much of
these principles we have
inculcated in ourselves.
Whether we like it or not, as
Jesuits all of us are called to
be leaders wherever we go.
I know for sure our
provinces are facing the
problem of genuine, authentic, inspiring leadership. I am
sure soon we have to take the baton from our elder brothers. I
strong feel we need to pay serious heed to the lack of
genuine, authentic, inspiring leadership, and foster in us
these principles. Thus wherever we go, we can become
livingmodelsforthepeopletoemulate.

“When God wants to provide new leaders, he
sometimes matures them in the furnace of
affliction.”
Being a leader is not a joke! It involves
responsibility, courage, hardships and above all
misunderstandings. We are called to be leaders as
Jesus was.
I would like to
narrate a story of two
Jesuit companions
who were really apples
and oranges. Ajith
from Honnawar, a city
in Uttar Kannada was
very faithful, sincere,
humble and a loving
boy. He joined the
Society after finishing
his PUC studies. The
same year a lad named
Prakash joined the Society soon after his 10th Std.
Prakash hailed from Koppa, a beautiful town in
Chickmagalur District. He was a worldly man, known
for breaking the rules. All used to call him Pakku, the
criminal mind. From Pre-novitiate onwards Pakku
never liked Ajith. Ajith was appointed a beadle at
every stages of formation, because of his honesty,
truthfulness, responsible and humble nature. He loved
everyone, especially Pakku. In contrast, Pakku hated
Ajith and used to say, “You are a Saint and we are
Martyrs!” Pakku used to break rules in the house, chat
with girls in ministry places and claimed to have some
girl friends! Ajith always confronted Pakku and tried
to change his behaviour so that he could become a
good Jesuit Priest. Years rolled on. Pakku kept on
hatingAjithandAjithcontinuedcarefrontingPakku.
Both of them got separated during Theology.Ajith was sent
toSpainforsomestudiesinIgnatianSpirituality.
After some years of ordination, they met each
other again, at Mount St Joseph, Bengaluru. Pakku's eyes
were filled with tears as he saw Ajith after so many years.
As they came near, both
hugged each other full of
tears in their eyes. Pakku
said, “Ajith, if you had not
confronted me, I wouldn't
have been here to meet you
asaJesuitPriest.”
Yes,Ajith as beadle
never tried to please
Prakash or any other for
that matter. Being faithful,
truthful, loving and a
humble person are the
main virtues of a leader.
Having done so, Ajith
saved one vocation. We are called to be the leaders in this
world. Let us not mind misunderstandings, hardships,
criticisms, or any heart-breaking comments. It is difficult
but not impossible. If one bears all things for Jesus and
helps others reach their fullest potential, or at least
encourage them to move steadily in that direction, one can
proudlysay,“I ama leaderforChrist.”

Iwas reflecting during a recollection about my
leadership qualities. I was evaluating my role as
the leader of the community and I was trying to
formulate the personality of an idealistic leader. Many
beautiful thoughts were coming to my mind. I was all
on a sudden touched by the idea of the Lord of Lords,
Jesus Christ, a perfect leader. But I was wondering how
I could imitate my master and become relevant to my
situation with all my shortcomings. I also remembered
the many characteristics of a good leader, given by our
socius in the novitiate during the course on leadership.
Even the life example and teachings of many inspiring
persons motivated me to imitate them. Though I was
pretty much inspired, the question was how could put
these aspects together. If I resolved to practise many of
these, I knew it was hard to follow and they would be
easily forgotten. But just as I was thinking deeply, a

I can draw inspiration and inspire others. I felt
by following this simple thing we can become good
leaders. First of all, we need to draw inspiration from
Jesus. He is the truth, the way and the life and a
charismatic leader. He taught his followers, reached
out to them, nourished them spiritually and physically,
understood them and he was even ready to wash their
feet.

Leaders must be close enough to relate to others, but far enough ahead to motivate themLeaders must be close enough to relate to others, but far enough ahead to motivate themLeaders must be close enough to relate to others, but far enough ahead to motivate them
As we look around in society, where the divide
and rule policy is so prevalent, we find
numerous leaders with varied agendas.They
inspire a group of people with their words, deeds and
sometimes with their lives. Not all the leaders work for
a good cause. But a leader is essential for any group,
because every group confirms its identity with its
leader. Without a leader the group will scatter, just like
thesheepwithoutashepherd.
In the modern world, we find leaders as those
who challenge the present process of going about in
society. They look for opportunities for bringing about
some changes in society. Primarily they dream or have
a vision for the larger group. They wish to share this
vision with all those who follow them. This vision
attracts people. In this way leaders are not those who
supervise; rather they are those who as true leaders
always go in front.Their life and deeds inspire others to
followthem.
Ignatian ModelofLeadership
Ignatian model of leadership emphasizes the service of
the other. Here leader is not a position to be enjoyed but
rather an opportunity to respect and uphold the dignity
of individuals who are under the leader's care,
especiallytobewithandstandbythepoor.
A leader always seeks to do more, using
discernment as a tool. A leader finds ways and means to do
things in a different and in a better way. A leader is restless
and always in tension. This, however, is a creative tension,
channelized by using proper discernment. This helps a
leadertoachievethegoalsinabetterway.
Chris Lowney, in his book, 'Heroic Leadership'
speaks of four pillars of Leadership. First of all, leaders are
those who are aware of their strengths, weaknesses, values
they stand by and their world view. Secondly, they are
innovative. They adapt themselves to the changing world.
They change their strategies according to the changing
situation. Thirdly, they accept others into their team with a
positive and loving attitude. Finally, they can energize
themselves and others too with their clear vision and heroic
ambitions.
Characteristicsof a Leader
In one or the other way we are all leaders. It is our daily
activities, small initiatives that make us leaders. It is
through those small spontaneous responses to opportunities
that we inspire others and become leaders. Thus leadership
emerges from within. But it is exhibited in one's activities
anditaffectsothers.

Every leader has a personal vision or certain
convictions. This is the inner spirit which forms a
leader. These visions and convictions guide the daily
activities of a person. This inspires others to follow
him/her. This is very clearly seen in the life of the
social activist,Anna Hazare, who went on an agitation,
to make India corruption free. He had a vision, which
inspiredotherstofollowhim.
Leadership is not a job or duty to be fulfilled. It
is spontaneous, springing from within. There are no
job prescriptions for a leader unlike for a boss or
manager. But a leader discerns the action he/she does
and the word that he/she utters, so that those who
follow him/her may not lose hope in him/her. Thus it is
a personal journey towards fulfilling one's
convictions.
Finally leadership is an ongoing process. One has to
form oneself continually according to the changing
circumstances, people, culture, priorities. One has to adjust
oneself to other changes, yet remain committed to one's
convictions. As every leader emerges by choice and not by
chance, one has to search for opportunities to make them
goldenratherthanwaitforagoldenopportunity.
Conclusion
A successful leader reads the signs of the time, updates
oneself. Every leader's life and actions are guided by the
vision one has especially for the larger society. Above all, a
successful leader is determined by one's passion, creativity
and commitment in living up to one's convictions. Everyone
is potentially a leader; one has to actualize that potency by
havingagreatvision,acreativevision.

To be a leader is to be a catalyst of change
within oneself and in the life of others.
Leadership is one of the skills that show us the
way to touch the point of our absolute best and to
awaken the special genius within us. Leadership has its
role to play in every
arena of our life. I
am very sure that all
of us are very much
aware about the role
of a leader in a team,
in an organization,
in a congregation
and elsewhere. In
my opinion, along
with the role that the
leader has to play in
the life of others there is so much to discover within
oneself. Therefore it is said that a true leader is one who
not only leads the way but also follows that path, and
for thisaleaderhastobeawellintegratedperson.
All of us are called to be leaders in one way or
the other. For me, to be a leader means to discover the
hidden potential within oneself and to channelize the
energy for the good of the others. By discovering the
efficient leader within us we offer ourselves as a great
gift to the world around us. Dr. Martin Luther King
says, “If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he
should sweep streets as Michelangelo painted or
Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare poetry.
He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of
heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great
sweeper who did his job well.” Therefore I believe that
being a leader means to leave footprints in the hearts of
others by our very way of life. In other words, it
consists in the effort that we put in to make this day
betterthanyesterday.
I believe that to be a leader and to raise oneself to the
absolute best is not that simple. We need to believe in
ourselves when no one else believes in us. Harry Firestone
says, “You get the best out of others when you give the best
of yourself.” Hence to bring a change in others we need to
change ourselves. So by
being a leader we
transform ourselves. If
w e w a n t t o b e
trustworthy, we need to
trust ourselves. Thus we
start developing stronger
relationships. Once we
move on in discovering
our potential, I think we
cross the boundary of our
limitations. As we move
towards the limits, our limits will expand to greater
possibilities. Being a leader we get the special grace to
accept criticism. When we take it positively, it will become
an opportunity for a better performance. Robin Sharma
says, “Great people construct monuments with the stones
theircriticsthrowatthem.”
Being leaders helps us to be dynamic. It's a lifelong
process. It helps us to bring out the best in others and in
ourselves. We learn to be passionate, learn time
management, and make the right choices. In this way we
gain mastery over ourselves. Swami Vivekananda says, “It
is very difficult to take the role of a leader; one must
accommodate to a thousand minds.” We become excellent
listeners. The strength of a leader is not just a physical
capacity, but an indomitable will. It is not just by knowing to
command one becomes a leader, but by being humble and
being ready to serve without expecting a reward. I mean to
say that one's life has to preach more than one's words. So
we are not born leaders but are made leaders as we walk our
life'sjourneytodiscoveranewworld withinus.

He is multilingual, known for his humility, simplicity

his road to the Vatican. Since the outlining theme of

In and through the sub-topics in this paper I wish that the

AMantoChange History
The Catholic Church was in need of a change, a change to
address the needs of the hour, a change to respond to the
signs of the times. While the Cardinals gathered informally
to discuss the needs of the Church at this point in time some
hard realities surfaced. First was the Vatileaks scandal
which was locked in a box and kept only for the successor of
Benedict XVI. Second was the gay lobbying that was
happening in theVatican circles amidst the sex scandals that
rocked the Church. Third was the financial scams that had
brokenoutandtheneedforreformatthisstage.
The Church was too wrapped up in itself, it was too
navel gazing. It was self referent. The Church ought to be a
caring mother, ready to offer the joys of Jesus to the world.
This was more or less the context that the Vatican Curia had
discerned. We needed a Pope deeply rooted in the Gospel,
ready to lead a Church with a new style of Papacy. After five
rounds of ballots did the Princes of the Catholic Church
finally elected Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio to be the
next Pope; he received 90 of the 115 votes by the eligible
Cardinals. He would be called Francis. By choosing this
name he was to take a break from the past. Yes! The world
was infor afewsurprises.

AHeroicLeader
What really makes a Heroic leader? Well, one cannot
help turning to some insights we see in Chris Lowney's
book, Heroic Leadership. In this section I want to
summarize what is said therein, as it will be of help in
pointing out the leadership traits we see in Pope
Francis. Jesuit
leadership can be
exercised in the
atmosphere of
obedience. It has
more to do with
who I am than with
whatIdo.
Leadership
is a way of life.
Jesuit leadership is
different; one
understands one's strengths and limitations, is ready to
embrace the challenging world, loves and energizes
others who come in contact with him -- this is what
makes a Jesuit Leader, and Francis, our Jesuit pope, is
no different. For, a Jesuit is not limited to a small
responsibility he is entrusted with; rather his worldview
is large; in the words of Nadal, the world is his home.A
Jesuit ought to shun all fear and grow day by day in his
love for and familiarity with the Lord and his people.
ThatmakesaJesuitleader.
Jesuits are those who are expected to learn when
they are confronted with newer challenging situations,
when they are placed on a mission and more so when they
plunge into action to do the work of the Lord, like someone
who has never done anything like this before. This is very

him. Jesuit leaders are expected to do what they are doing
and do it wholeheartedly, being self-aware, loving, creative
and heroic. This is Heroic Leadership and we have these
qualities abounding in Pope Francis, a Jesuit at heart,
convinced of his call to serve the poor and to bring them not

TheChallengeof Leadingthrough a Change
What could be the biggest challenge to Pope Francis?
It is the challenge of leading through a change. He has
begun well, on the right note, and now he needs to
carry on. Words of Gandhi fit in here aptly, “Be the
change you want to see in the world.” His motto is to
help people realize that we are a Church of the poor
and for the poor. He is a charismatic in the true sense of
the word as he can attract crowds to himself. Truly
fresh air has blown once again through the old rusty
windows of the Church. In Pope Francis we see a man
who is free from the inordinate attachments of the
world and free for the mission of Christ to the world.
He is a man of courage to lead people through a
change. He has learnt from the hard and bitter
experiencesoflife.
He is in for a revolution, but is not in to fight it all alone. He
wants to take the Church along. He is a discerning person
who believes in consulting others before arriving at a
decision. Moreover he is a man who listens to his heart; he is
not afraid to transcend himself and of course he believes in
leading a life that bears a true witness value. This is the
challenge of leading through a Change; he has set out to lead
withcourage,compassionanddeeprootedconvictions.
Conclusion
It has been a very spiritual experience for me to write this
essay. I have not only learnt a lot from this experience but
have also received much food for thought as I look up to
Pope Francis for inspiration. May he continue to inspire
many more to learn from him and to learn to look at Christ
who ishissoleinspiration!

Just for curiosityI typed the word 'leadership' on Google search engine. Behold! I had about 48,90,00,000 results in 0.18 seconds. We are living in a world of cut-throat competition, aren't we? Survival of the fastest and smartest is the mantra of this world. Fast and Fury are the catchwords, 'instance' is the order of the day. Being a leader becomes indispensable in such a situation. What does it mean to be a leader in today's world? Ability to think innovatively, creatively and execute persuasively and productively faster than the others. It all sounds corporate, doesn't it? The bookstore shelves today abound with leadership books and manuals (“how to become effective leader in fifteen days”).The very fact that the Management Schools and IITs are mushrooming in the country shows the dearth for genuine leaders in the country. Today anyone who has money, muscle power, or political clout considers him/herself a leader. 'Command and control' is their only method of leadership. If anyone opposes, he/she i s s i l e n c e d o r bulldozed. I am sure you can think of umpteen number of such instances in every arena of ourcountry. In such a situation what is our Jesuit contribution to Leadership? Chris Lowney, a former American Jesuit, in his book 'Heroic Leadership' mentions four important Jesuit leadership traits which couldbecomeamodelformodernleadership. Our Jesuit training should help us realize these four aspects. Firstly we're all leaders, and we are leading all the time, well or poorly. Secondly Leadership springs from within. It's about who I am as much as what I do. Thirdly Leadership is not an act. It is my life, a way of living. Lastly I never complete the task of becoming a leader. It is an ongoingprocess. Four principles stand out in Jesuit leadership. The Jesuits becomeleadersby  Understanding their strengths, weaknesses, values, andworldview(self-awareness)  Confidently innovating and adapting to embrace a changingworld(ingenuity)  Engaging others with a positive, loving attitude (Love)  E n e r g i z i n g themselves and others through heroic ambitions (Heroism) We need to ask ourselves how much of these principles we have inculcated in ourselves. Whether we like it or not, as Jesuits all of us are called to be leaders wherever we go. I know for sure our provinces are facing the problem of genuine, authentic, inspiring leadership. I am sure soon we have to take the baton from our elder brothers. I strong feel we need to pay serious heed to the lack of genuine, authentic, inspiring leadership, and foster in us these principles. Thus wherever we go, we can become livingmodelsforthepeopletoemulate. “When God wantsto provide new leaders, he sometimes matures them in the furnace of affliction.” Being a leader is not a joke! It involves responsibility, courage, hardships and above all misunderstandings. We are called to be leaders as Jesus was. I would like to narrate a story of two Jesuit companions who were really apples and oranges. Ajith from Honnawar, a city in Uttar Kannada was very faithful, sincere, humble and a loving boy. He joined the Society after finishing his PUC studies. The same year a lad named Prakash joined the Society soon after his 10th Std. Prakash hailed from Koppa, a beautiful town in Chickmagalur District. He was a worldly man, known for breaking the rules. All used to call him Pakku, the criminal mind. From Pre-novitiate onwards Pakku never liked Ajith. Ajith was appointed a beadle at every stages of formation, because of his honesty, truthfulness, responsible and humble nature. He loved everyone, especially Pakku. In contrast, Pakku hated Ajith and used to say, “You are a Saint and we are Martyrs!” Pakku used to break rules in the house, chat with girls in ministry places and claimed to have some girl friends! Ajith always confronted Pakku and tried to change his behaviour so that he could become a good Jesuit Priest. Years rolled on. Pakku kept on hatingAjithandAjithcontinuedcarefrontingPakku. Both of them got separated during Theology.Ajith was sent toSpainforsomestudiesinIgnatianSpirituality. After some years of ordination, they met each other again, at Mount St Joseph, Bengaluru. Pakku's eyes were filled with tears as he saw Ajith after so many years. As they came near, both hugged each other full of tears in their eyes. Pakku said, “Ajith, if you had not confronted me, I wouldn't have been here to meet you asaJesuitPriest.” Yes,Ajith as beadle never tried to please Prakash or any other for that matter. Being faithful, truthful, loving and a humble person are the main virtues of a leader. Having done so, Ajith saved one vocation. We are called to be the leaders in this world. Let us not mind misunderstandings, hardships, criticisms, or any heart-breaking comments. It is difficult but not impossible. If one bears all things for Jesus and helps others reach their fullest potential, or at least encourage them to move steadily in that direction, one can proudlysay,“I ama leaderforChrist.” I AM A LEADER FOR CHRISTI AM A LEADER FOR CHRISTI AM A LEADER FOR CHRIST Pruthvi Rodrigues SJPruthvi Rodrigues SJPruthvi Rodrigues SJ mArCH 2015mArCH 2015mArCH 2015 Pg.03Pg.03Pg.03 Writers’ ForumWriters’ ForumWriters’ Forum A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the wayA leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the wayA leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way

Iwas reflecting duringa recollection about my leadership qualities. I was evaluating my role as the leader of the community and I was trying to formulate the personality of an idealistic leader. Many beautiful thoughts were coming to my mind. I was all on a sudden touched by the idea of the Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ, a perfect leader. But I was wondering how I could imitate my master and become relevant to my situation with all my shortcomings. I also remembered the many characteristics of a good leader, given by our socius in the novitiate during the course on leadership. Even the life example and teachings of many inspiring persons motivated me to imitate them. Though I was pretty much inspired, the question was how could put these aspects together. If I resolved to practise many of these, I knew it was hard to follow and they would be easily forgotten. But just as I was thinking deeply, a beautifulideaflashedintomymind. I can draw inspiration and inspire others. I felt by following this simple thing we can become good leaders. First of all, we need to draw inspiration from Jesus. He is the truth, the way and the life and a charismatic leader. He taught his followers, reached out to them, nourished them spiritually and physically, understood them and he was even ready to wash their feet. The world has really witnessed capable, committed and competent leaders like Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela, MotherTeresa, Pope Francis ...... and the list goes on. Why only look at great people? The simple people in the ministry places, lovely children, committed staff in our institutions and even the strangers have so much to teach us. In order to become effective and efficient Christian leaders we should be inspired by their life, words anddeeds. Once we are inspired we need to inspire others. As we lookaround in society, where the divide and rule policy is so prevalent, we find numerous leaders with varied agendas. They inspire a group of people with their words, deeds and sometimes with their lives. Not all the leaders work for a good cause. But a leader is essential for any group, because every group confirms its identity with its leader. Without a leader the group will scatter, just like thesheepwithoutashepherd. In the modern world, we find leaders as those who challenge the present process of going about in society. They look for opportunities for bringing about some changes in society. Primarily they dream or have a vision for the larger group. They wish to share this vision with all those who follow them. This vision attracts people. In this way leaders are not those who supervise; rather they are those who as true leaders always go in front.Their life and deeds inspire others to followthem. Ignatian ModelofLeadership Ignatian model of leadership emphasizes the service of the other. Here leader is not a position to be enjoyed but rather an opportunity to respect and uphold the dignity of individuals who are under the leader's care, especiallytobewithandstandbythepoor. A leader always seeks to do more, using discernment as a tool. A leader finds ways and means to do things in a different and in a better way. A leader is restless and always in tension. This, however, is a creative tension, channelized by using proper discernment. This helps a leadertoachievethegoalsinabetterway. Chris Lowney, in his book, 'Heroic Leadership' speaks of four pillars of Leadership. First of all, leaders are those who are aware of their strengths, weaknesses, values they stand by and their world view. Secondly, they are innovative. They adapt themselves to the changing world. They change their strategies according to the changing situation. Thirdly, they accept others into their team with a positive and loving attitude. Finally, they can energize themselves and others too with their clear vision and heroic ambitions. Characteristicsof a Leader In one or the other way we are all leaders. It is our daily activities, small initiatives that make us leaders. It is through those small spontaneous responses to opportunities that we inspire others and become leaders. Thus leadership emerges from within. But it is exhibited in one's activities anditaffectsothers. LEADERSHIPLEADERSHIPLEADERSHIP Nishanth Noronha SJNishanthNoronha SJNishanth Noronha SJ To Love and to be Loved To Encourage and to be Enthusiastic To Aspire and to be Available To Discern and to be Disciplined To Excel and to be Extraordinary To Respect and to be Responsible To Serve and to be Selfless To Harken and to be Humble To Instruct and to be Innovative To Preach and to Practice Every leader has a personal vision or certain convictions. This is the inner spirit which forms a leader. These visions and convictions guide the daily activities of a person. This inspires others to follow him/her. This is very clearly seen in the life of the social activist,Anna Hazare, who went on an agitation, to make India corruption free. He had a vision, which inspiredotherstofollowhim. Leadership is not a job or duty to be fulfilled. It is spontaneous, springing from within. There are no job prescriptions for a leader unlike for a boss or manager. But a leader discerns the action he/she does and the word that he/she utters, so that those who follow him/her may not lose hope in him/her. Thus it is a personal journey towards fulfilling one's convictions. Finally leadership is an ongoing process. One has to form oneself continually according to the changing circumstances, people, culture, priorities. One has to adjust oneself to other changes, yet remain committed to one's convictions. As every leader emerges by choice and not by chance, one has to search for opportunities to make them goldenratherthanwaitforagoldenopportunity. Conclusion A successful leader reads the signs of the time, updates oneself. Every leader's life and actions are guided by the vision one has especially for the larger society. Above all, a successful leader is determined by one's passion, creativity and commitment in living up to one's convictions. Everyone is potentially a leader; one has to actualize that potency by havingagreatvision, acreativevision. IT IS SOMETHING THAT GIVES US AN OPPORTUNITY, AS OUR LORD JESUS DID. To be aleader is to be a catalyst of change within oneself and in the life of others. Leadership is one of the skills that show us the way to touch the point of our absolute best and to awaken the special genius within us. Leadership has its role to play in every arena of our life. I am very sure that all of us are very much aware about the role of a leader in a team, in an organization, in a congregation and elsewhere. In my opinion, along with the role that the leader has to play in the life of others there is so much to discover within oneself. Therefore it is said that a true leader is one who not only leads the way but also follows that path, and for thisaleaderhastobeawellintegratedperson. All of us are called to be leaders in one way or the other. For me, to be a leader means to discover the hidden potential within oneself and to channelize the energy for the good of the others. By discovering the efficient leader within us we offer ourselves as a great gift to the world around us. Dr. Martin Luther King says, “If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets as Michelangelo painted or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great sweeper who did his job well.” Therefore I believe that being a leader means to leave footprints in the hearts of others by our very way of life. In other words, it consists in the effort that we put in to make this day betterthanyesterday. I believe that to be a leader and to raise oneself to the absolute best is not that simple. We need to believe in ourselves when no one else believes in us. Harry Firestone says, “You get the best out of others when you give the best of yourself.” Hence to bring a change in others we need to change ourselves. So by being a leader we transform ourselves. If w e w a n t t o b e trustworthy, we need to trust ourselves. Thus we start developing stronger relationships. Once we move on in discovering our potential, I think we cross the boundary of our limitations. As we move towards the limits, our limits will expand to greater possibilities. Being a leader we get the special grace to accept criticism. When we take it positively, it will become an opportunity for a better performance. Robin Sharma says, “Great people construct monuments with the stones theircriticsthrowatthem.” Being leaders helps us to be dynamic. It's a lifelong process. It helps us to bring out the best in others and in ourselves. We learn to be passionate, learn time management, and make the right choices. In this way we gain mastery over ourselves. Swami Vivekananda says, “It is very difficult to take the role of a leader; one must accommodate to a thousand minds.” We become excellent listeners. The strength of a leader is not just a physical capacity, but an indomitable will. It is not just by knowing to command one becomes a leader, but by being humble and being ready to serve without expecting a reward. I mean to say that one's life has to preach more than one's words. So we are not born leaders but are made leaders as we walk our life'sjourneytodiscoveranewworld withinus. The three wordsthat can beautifully summarize the leader of 1.2 Billion Catholics all over the world are Courage, Compassion and Conviction. Pope Francis, formerly Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was elected to be the leader of the Catholic Church on 13 March 2013.At 78 he is the First Jesuit Pope and he succeeds Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI who resigned on 28 February 2013. Pope Francis is a man of the poor and for the poor after his model and patron St Francis ofAssisi. In just nearly two years as leader he is widely known as the People's Pope, alwaysreachingouttoothers. The Spiritual Exercises are at the core of his being. He is an able administrator and a true shepherd. He is multilingual, known for his humility, simplicity and saintliness. He has proved himself to be a pope of surprises. This paper highlights Jorge Mario Bergoglio's humble beginnings, his Jesuit journey and his road to the Vatican. Since the outlining theme of this article is based on Leadership, we shall take a look at Pope Francis, the Heroic Leader, a man to change history, at his unique knack for surprising people and at the challenges he faces in leading us through these changingtimes.I shallconcludewithafewreflections. In and through the sub-topics in this paper I wish that the reader will unearth the Ignatian Heritage that is so innate to thisJesuitPope. AMantoChange History The Catholic Church was in need of a change, a change to address the needs of the hour, a change to respond to the signs of the times. While the Cardinals gathered informally to discuss the needs of the Church at this point in time some hard realities surfaced. First was the Vatileaks scandal which was locked in a box and kept only for the successor of Benedict XVI. Second was the gay lobbying that was happening in theVatican circles amidst the sex scandals that rocked the Church. Third was the financial scams that had brokenoutandtheneedforreformatthisstage. The Church was too wrapped up in itself, it was too navel gazing. It was self referent. The Church ought to be a caring mother, ready to offer the joys of Jesus to the world. This was more or less the context that the Vatican Curia had discerned. We needed a Pope deeply rooted in the Gospel, ready to lead a Church with a new style of Papacy. After five rounds of ballots did the Princes of the Catholic Church finally elected Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio to be the next Pope; he received 90 of the 115 votes by the eligible Cardinals. He would be called Francis. By choosing this name he was to take a break from the past. Yes! The world was infor afewsurprises. AHeroicLeader What really makesa Heroic leader? Well, one cannot help turning to some insights we see in Chris Lowney's book, Heroic Leadership. In this section I want to summarize what is said therein, as it will be of help in pointing out the leadership traits we see in Pope Francis. Jesuit leadership can be exercised in the atmosphere of obedience. It has more to do with who I am than with whatIdo. Leadership is a way of life. Jesuit leadership is different; one understands one's strengths and limitations, is ready to embrace the challenging world, loves and energizes others who come in contact with him -- this is what makes a Jesuit Leader, and Francis, our Jesuit pope, is no different. For, a Jesuit is not limited to a small responsibility he is entrusted with; rather his worldview is large; in the words of Nadal, the world is his home.A Jesuit ought to shun all fear and grow day by day in his love for and familiarity with the Lord and his people. ThatmakesaJesuitleader. Jesuits are those who are expected to learn when they are confronted with newer challenging situations, when they are placed on a mission and more so when they plunge into action to do the work of the Lord, like someone who has never done anything like this before. This is very muchseeninthelifeof Pope Francistoo. The guiding force for a Jesuit leader is to be a m a n o f t h e S p i r i t u a l Exercises, ever searching for the Magis, never to be satisfied with the status quo, but to dare to be the change the world wants to see, and thus we find that Francis is no different. He is just living his Jesuitness that is so natural to him. Jesuit leaders are expected to do what they are doing and do it wholeheartedly, being self-aware, loving, creative and heroic. This is Heroic Leadership and we have these qualities abounding in Pope Francis, a Jesuit at heart, convinced of his call to serve the poor and to bring them not pots of charity but measures of justice, peace, fraternity, love, concern, careandfellowship. SIX ASSETS OF A TRUE LEADERSIX ASSETS OF A TRUE LEADERSIX ASSETS OF A TRUE LEADER Noel Dias SJNoel Dias SJNoel Dias SJ TheChallengeof Leadingthrough a Change What could be the biggest challenge to Pope Francis? It is the challenge of leading through a change. He has begun well, on the right note, and now he needs to carry on. Words of Gandhi fit in here aptly, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” His motto is to help people realize that we are a Church of the poor and for the poor. He is a charismatic in the true sense of the word as he can attract crowds to himself. Truly fresh air has blown once again through the old rusty windows of the Church. In Pope Francis we see a man who is free from the inordinate attachments of the world and free for the mission of Christ to the world. He is a man of courage to lead people through a change. He has learnt from the hard and bitter experiencesoflife. He is in for a revolution, but is not in to fight it all alone. He wants to take the Church along. He is a discerning person who believes in consulting others before arriving at a decision. Moreover he is a man who listens to his heart; he is not afraid to transcend himself and of course he believes in leading a life that bears a true witness value. This is the challenge of leading through a Change; he has set out to lead withcourage, compassionanddeeprootedconvictions. Conclusion It has been a very spiritual experience for me to write this essay. I have not only learnt a lot from this experience but have also received much food for thought as I look up to Pope Francis for inspiration. May he continue to inspire many more to learn from him and to learn to look at Christ who ishissoleinspiration! A Leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way. A saga of popular people in their own social space flood our thoughts. The question is, are they Leaders in therealsense oftheword? For some, leader is a person or an image or an idea or a myth which directs a n d g u i d e s them to their longings or d e s t i n i e s . However for others a leader is one 'who organizes a group of people to achieve a common goal'. According to the latter definition a few stand under the roofof aLeader. “Leadership is an exercise in language that results in the realization of a future that wasn't going to happen anyway, which future fulfills (or contributes to fulfilling)theconcernsof therelevantparties...” (Warner Erhard, Michael C Jensen, SteveSaffronand KariGranger) The general notion of selecting a leader is in a given context and the estimated challenges we would face, appropriate plans for the future and the way a society or an institution should function, with a vision ofthefuture.
