3. Reusing and Recycling
• According to the EPA, in 2010, 15% of all PE bags sacks and wraps
were recycled
• 90% of people go beyond recycling – reusing their plastic bags for bin
liners, to carry their lunches or for pet waste
• As a result, 75-90% of all plastic bags are reused or recycled – and
that number is growing

4. Benefits of Plastic Bags
• Plastic bags are 100% recyclable, safe and in the U.S. are
made from natural gas – not foreign oil
• They have a smaller carbon footprint than paper or reusable
bags
• There’s no such thing as a “single-use” plastic bag
• Plastic bags live a second life when used to create building
materials or new bags

Let me tell you a little about the company I work for… Hilex is an industry leading manufacturer and recycler of plastic bag and film products, and we’ve been doing business since 2003 All of our bags are 100 percent recyclable and we are dedicated to creating sustainable packing solutions that reduces litter and preserves natural resourcesAs you’ll see from this map, we support 1250 jobs in nine manufacturing facilities across the United States, and we have our headquarters right here in South Carolina.
In 2006, we opened the world’s largest recycling facility in North Vernon, INOur North Vernon facility earned a Four-star Sustainable Plastic Product (spp) rating from Sustainable Green Products and it is where we support the lion’s share of our plastic bag recycling, integrate more post-consumer plastic into our bags, and raise awareness of plastic bag recycling optionsThe Indiana center is the industry leader in recycling technology and is home to our “Gray is the New Green” program
Overall, 15% of the nation’s plastic bags and wraps are recycled, and 90% of people reuse them for other purposes.
And we’re continuing to push ourselves to become an even better company We aim to have all of our plastic bags contain 40 percent recycled content, and we’re well on our way there Our bags currently contain 10 to 30 percent recycled content. We hope that with increased consumer education, placing more collection bins in retail locations and growing our network of recycling locations that we’ll be able to reach this goal in the next 4 years
