Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist who is credited with painting one of the first recognized purely abstract works. He was a pioneer in abstract art and focused his work on exploring non-objective compositions using forms and colors. Kandinsky theorized that color and shape could be used independently of visual subjects to elicit psychological and emotional responses from the viewer.
