Utah has four major lakes including the Great Salt Lake. The Colorado River cuts deep canyons through the state's 82,144 square miles. Kings Peak is Utah's highest point at 13,528 feet and the Great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the western United States. Utah became a state on January 4, 1896 and Salt Lake City began construction on July 24, 1847. Salt Lake City serves as the state capital and has a statue honoring the Mormon pioneers who first settled there.
