Introduction
Knowledge and technology is changing day by day. As a teacher
both the factors has to be handled in the same manner. Information and
communication technology (ICT) can provide more flexible and effective
ways for professional development for teachers, improve pre-and in-
service teacher training and connect teachers to the global teacher
community. Many of the major institutions of our society have changed
and the way we live our daily lives have been impacted. However, the
impact on education may just beginning to be felt as teachers integrate
this new technology into their teaching. Our commerce teachers cannot
keep away from these changes. Commerce and technology are closely
related with each other. Information and Communication Technology‟s
innovations are widening the scope of Commerce in several ways. The
development of technology helps the learning tools at the command of
the children are getting more effective and sophisticated. In the era of
dynamic changes in the field of Commerce, Trade and Industry,
Information Technology has a pivotal role to play in theeducation of that
discipline. The role of Information Technology in commerce
educationgoes far beyond the direct use of instructional devices.
Information Technology canprovide coverage of a growing knowledge base
associated with the information explosion inall areas including
Commerce.
Finding the role of ICT in Commerce Discipline
United Nations Development Programme defines ICT as „ICTs are
basically information-handling tools- a varied set of goods, applications and
services that are used to produce, store, process, distribute and exchange
information. They include the „old‟ ICTs of radio, television and telephone, and
the „new‟ ICTs of computers, satellite and wireless technology and the Internet.
These different tools are now able to work together, and combine to form our
„networked world‟ – a massive infrastructure of interconnected telephone
services, standardized computing hardware, the internet, radio and television,
which reaches into every corner of the globe‟. Technological literacy is required
for learning with technologies to be possible, implying a two-step process in
which students learn about the technologies before they can actually use them
to learn. The computers can itself be the object of instruction. Computer can be
used very effectively as an object of instruction in Commerce Education.
As per the European Commission, the importance of ICT lies in the
technology itself than its ability to create greater access to information and
communication in underserved populations. Many countries around the world
have established organisations for the promotion of ICTs, because it is feared
that unless less technologically advanced areas have a chance to catch up.
Teachers have taught through lectures and presentations interspersed
with tutorials and learning activities designed to consolidate and rehearse
the content. Contemporary settings are now favouring curriculum that
promote competency and performance. Curriculum are starting to
emphasize capabilities and to be concerned more with how the information
will be used than with what the information is. Contemporary ICTs are able
to provide strong support for all these requirements and there are now many
outstanding examples of world class settings for competency and
performance-based curricula that make sound use of the affordances of
these technologies.Learning through computers and the Internet combines
learning about them with learning with them. It involves learning the
technological skills “just-in-time” or when the learner needs to learn them as
he or she engages in a curriculum-related activity. For example, secondary
school students who must present a report on the impact on their
community of an increase in the price of oil for an Economics class may
start doing research online, using spreadsheet and database programs to
help organize and analyse the data they have collected, as well using a word
processing application to prepare their written report.
Learning with the technology means focusing on how the technology
can be the means to learning ends across the curriculum. It includes:
 Presentation, demonstration, and the manipulation of data
using productivity tools
 Use of curriculum-specific applications types such as
educational games, drill and practice, simulations, tutorials,
virtual laboratories, visualizations and graphical
representations of abstract concepts, musical composition, and
expert systems
 Use of information and resources on CD-ROM or online such as
encyclopedia, interactive maps and atlases, electronic journals
and other references.
In concert with geographical flexibility, technology-facilitated educational
programs also remove many of the temporal constraints that face learners with
special needs. Students are starting to appreciate the capability to undertake
education anywhere, anytime and anyplace. One of the most vital contributions
of ICT in the field of education is- Easy Access to Learning.
When looking at the current widespread diffusion and use of ICT in modern
societies, especially by the young the so-called digital generation then it should
be clear that ICT will affect the complete learning process today and in the
future. Authenticity is an important issue which should be addressed in the
design and development of learning environments. Learning environments need
to reflect the potential uses of knowledge that pupils are expected to master, in
order to prevent the acquired knowledge from becoming inert. In addition,
teachers should stimulate pupils to engage in active knowledge construction.
This calls for open-ended learning environments instead of learning
environments which focus on a mere transmission of facts
The integration of ICT with teaching and learning has produced some of the
significant positive gains in learners‟ knowledge, skills and attitudes by
providing the following key advantages:
 Explore and represent information dynamically and in many forms
 Become socially aware and more confident
 Increase motivation
 Communicate effectively about complex processes
 Develop better understanding and broader view of processes and
systems
Modes through which integration of ICT
The use of information and communication technology (ICT) such as
Internet applications, CD-ROMs, video technology and various computer
attachments and software programs have caused many changes in society.
These changes have not just been of a technical nature but more importantly of
a structural nature. Many of the major institutions of our society have changed
and the way we live our daily lives have been impacted. However, the impact on
education may just beginning to be felt as teachers integrate this new
technology into their teaching. In the early stages of the use of ICT in teaching,
looking at the experiences of teachers at a high school in the forefront provides
some clues as to what possibilities and problems may be presented with this
new technology.
Learning is a combination of learning services and technology to
provide high quality integrated learning at any time and any place. It results
from a new blend of resources, interactivity, performance and structured
learning activities .The methodology followed in E-Learning makes use of
various technologies to enhance the quality of the learning process, by
helping full realisation of the educational objectives aimed at and by
catering to the needs of a more diverse learner population with minimal
expenditure.
Information and communication technology are becoming an important
part of the life. Rapidly developing virtual education and distant learning
methods are replacing the classical methods of education. IT and Computers
are widely used to expand teaching possibilities. As education is a complex
process in which human and technical resources should be used very
carefully, concepts related to teaching and learning has changed radically. The
rapid growing visualization techniques are one of the significant developments
in this area. Computer and related technologies widely used all over the world.
As it can dramatically improve the learning performance of students as well as
the teaching productivity and effectiveness of teachers, these are widely used in
education.
The various modes through which ICT can be integrated as follows:
 Internet
Internet is a network where thousands of computers are connected to a
worldwide network through a common communication protocol. Internet today
has grown into a forty million user network and continues to grow at the rate of
an estimated twenty thousand users every day. Internet is undoubtedly, the
world‟s wonder network, carrying information on almost any subject under the
sun.
 E-Learning
The term E-Learning is derived from „electronic learning‟ and refers to
technology based learning or the „electronic‟ delivery of learning. It covers a
wide range of distributed knowledge applications and processes, including
computer-based learning, web-based learning, virtual classrooms, and digital
collaboration. Thus, E-Learning includes the delivery of content via all
electronic media, including the Internet, Intranets. Extranets etc.
 Power Point Presentation
Now a day the computers play a vital role in the storage, retrieval and
transmission of information. Most of the colleges and schools are tapping
information through this media for curriculum transaction. Presentation
software‟s are used to present and idea, topic, message, lecture, information,
etc. on a subject, in front of an audience using computer system and LCD
projector.
 CD-ROMs
CDs are developed to help the users interact easily. The content or topic to be
taught are programmed and stored in the CDs with multimedia features and
effect. CD ROMs are the storage media used to record, retrieve, read and replay
the digitally formatted content of programmes and packages.
Conclusion
In order to provide a richlearning experience for a new generation of
Commerce students, it is important thatcontent, technology and pedagogy
are equally balanced. In designing learning materials using ICT productivity
tools certain pedagogical principles needs to be considered carefully. Mere
ICT tools by themselves do not make good pedagogy. The critical question in
education is- in what ways ICT can enhance learning and teaching
practices. The adoption and use of ICTs in education have a positive impact
on teaching, learning, and research. ICT can affect the delivery of education
and enable wider access to the same. In addition, it will increase flexibility
so that learners can access the education regardless of time and
geographical barriers. It can influence the way students are taught and how
they learn.ICT can meaningfully communicate all types of information in
graphic, text, audio and video.Mere learning ICT skills is not suffice, but
using ICT to improve the teaching and learning is the key for pedagogy-
technology integration. ICT brings so many facilities towards Commerce
education system.
