In the dark ages of the web, it wasn’t enough to know how to “build a web page”; we were WEBMASTERS. Since then, the development community has gone through trends from Javascript to Flash to PHP to Flash again and now back to Javascript and the pace of change has never been faster. So where do we go from here?

javascript
when Jobs declared that iOS would never support Flash, he changed
the development landscape
mobile web viewing was doubling each year (ca. 2007-2010)
devs started moving back to javascript to accomplish animations and
complex data loading
open source mentality increasing in popularity
node.js gaining mind-share, express.js released, socket.io released

new framework releases are slowing

"preferred stacks" are emerging (react
+ redux + webpack + express)
abstractions on top of standard
libraries are starting to get adopted
(apollo, feathers, meteor)
many api providers are publishing
