A Comparison of the Use of Adjectives and Onomatopoeic Words for Describing E...Tim Schwartz
This MA thesis compares the use of adjectives and onomatopoeic words in English and Japanese for describing emotions, states, and actions. It presents the results of a pilot study that found Japanese native speakers are two and a half times more likely to use onomatopoeia, while English speakers prefer adjectives. The thesis will examine expressive language use in both languages, compare parts of speech employed, and present theories for the frequent use of onomatopoeia in Japanese based on concepts from cultural studies. It is divided into sections on previous research, characteristics of onomatopoeia, the pilot study, results and discussion, implications for teaching Japanese, and hypotheses for onomatopoeia use
