Janis Harbin began working for Bill Joplin's small air conditioning company 31 years ago and is now the vice president. She admits she often worked long hours but loves her job and the people she works with. o one was more surprised than Janis Harbin when she gave
her two-week notice at the bank where she’d worked for
over three years. “I went in for my annual review and was
told I’d gone as far as I could go,” she said. “It was like someone put
a stop sign in front of me, so I left.” She heard about a local fledgling
air conditioning company looking for a receptionist and applied. Fast
forward 31 years—that one-man shop now employs 85 people, with
Janis as vice president and thousands of loyal customers.
“Bill Joplin taught me everything I know about how to run a business, how
to treat people, and what kind of person I wanted to be,” Janis said. “He
gave me as many opportunities as I wanted. She admits she often worked
60-plus hours a week, but she did it because she loves her job and loves
the people she works with and for.
“Many of our customers have no idea how big we’ve grown,” Janis said.
“They call and we still know their name and remember their address.
Our motto, ‘People serving people... honestly... professionally’ says it
all. We’re family here.”
When a harrowing accident left Janis with a traumatic brain injury in 2012,
that family rallied around her giving her the time she needed to heal and
recuperate. “All I could think about was getting back to work,” she said. “I
can’t imagine getting up every day and not going to the job I love.”
