3. Introduction and importance:
Ivy gourd or little gourd, KUNDSRU it is grown in most parts of India,
Tropical Africa, Central America, China, Malaysia, and other tropical
countries. The fruits are smooth , light green in colour. It is most
commonly used as a vegetable in Southern and Central India. Both
mature and immature fruits are used for cooking. The fruits are rich
source of carbohydrates, proteins , vitamin A and C. the leaves are
also used in some parts of India for medicinal use. Ivy gourd is a
dioecious in nature. Posses long tuberous roots. Fruits are ovoid or
elliptical, they are smooth bright-green with white stripes, when
immature and scarlet red when ripe.

• Soil should be well drained, fertile and rich in organic matter.
• Soil should have proper drainage.
• It is a warm season vegetable , bears excellent crop during summer and rainy season.
• Can tolerate cold in winter.
• For best growth it needs warm and moist climate.
Seed and sowing:
• Propagated by stem cuttings.
• Cuttings of 25cm long with pencil thickness.
• Planting : June- july, Feb – march.
• Spacing; basins 60- 75 cm in diameter, are made apart 2m both sides.
• Usually 5 – 10% of vines of male type should be planted .

8. Training and pruning:
• Plants require support to keep their shoots , to grow up.
• Plants are trained on bower system.
• The central shoots growing from the main stem below the bower should be removed in
order to encourage shoots on the bower.
• Dead and diseased braches should be removed.
• Nutrient management:
• FYM: 20-25t/ha.
• NPK : as recommended by VNMKV 100:50:50 kg NPK/ha.
Weeding and irrigation :
weed should be done regularly, shallow hoeing is done, irrigation once in a week, no need
of irrigation in rainy season.Water stagnation should be avoided.

9. Harvesting and yield:
• Ivy gourds fruits are produced almost throughout the year, in
severe winter, fruit yield is reduced .
Fruits are harvested when the colour of the fruits changes dark
green to bright or light green.
Yield: 8-10Kg/vine
10-12 t/ha.
