The Holy Quran
Mankind One Community The Quran affirms the unity of mankind and disapproves of any attempt to divide mankind into superior and inferior groups on the basis of colour, race, caste or creed. It tells us that "mankind is but one community" (2 : 213).
'O you who have believed, fear Allah, and let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow—and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do' [59:18]

Islamic view of Illness In contrast to contemporary views, disease does not always have a negative connotation in Islam. According to the classical Islamic scholar Imam al-Ghazzali, "illness is one of the forms of experience by which man arrives at a knowledge of God.” Other Muslim scholars argue that falling ill may be Allah's way of forcing the person to rest or care for the body before it deteriorates further.

Death and Dying in the Islamic Tradition
Death is very agonizing; even the best of us will go through the pain, as did the best
Death is not something that you can feel secure from, wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you should be within fortresses built up strong and high.. (4:78). Indeed the death from which you flee—indeed it will meet you. (62:8)
O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah. And whoever does that – then those are the losers. And spend from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, “ My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous!” But never will Allah delay a soul when its time has come. And Allah is all acquainted with what you do. (63:9-11)
Do Not Wish for Death No matter how much it hurts, do not wish for death. The Prophet said to his uncle ‘Abbaas : “ Uncle, do not wish for death-for if you were good and lived longer, adding more good deeds to your good deeds is better for you. And if you were bad and lived longer, being given the chance to rectify your bad deeds, is better for you. So don’t wish for death.”
Upon Death The eyes and the mouth of the deceased should be closed, and the body covered with a clean sheet. Those present should say, “Innaa lillahi wa innaa ilayhi raji’un” (“ Surely we are from Allah, and to Him is our return ” [Al-Baqarah 2:156]).

Editor's Notes

  • #17 For those who do not have a firm belief in the Hereafter, for them death is a depressing subject, but for the Believer, death is a subject that motivates, because it puts in perspective what life is really about. It basically puts us on the right course if we are not on it. A strong reminder.
  • #18 of us, sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam. He said, while dying: None has the right to be worshiped by Allah”(like a way of swearing), “surely, death has its pangs/agonies.”
