5. The diet and stimulating drinks of our days are not conducive to
the best state of health. Tea, coffee and tobacco are all stimulants
and contain poisons. They are not only unnecessary, but harmful,
and should be discarded if we would add temperance to science
(Review and Herald, 21-2-1888).

6. Tea and coffee do not nourish the body. They soothe suddenly,
before the stomach has had time to digest them. This proves that
what the consumers of these stimulants call strength comes from
the excitement of the nerves of the stomach, which transmit the
irritation to the brain, and this in turn is prevented from increasing
the activity of the heart and infusing a short-lived energy into the
whole organism. All this is false force, the further results of which
leave them in a worse condition, for they impart not a particle of
natural force (Gems of the Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 196).

7. Health is in no sense improved by the use of things which stimulate
for a time, but which afterwards cause a reaction which leaves the
human organism more depressed than before. Tea and coffee
stimulate flagging energies for the moment, but when their
immediate influence has passed, a state of depression ensues.
These drinks have no food in them at all. The milk and sugar which
they contain constitute all the nourishment which a cup of tea or
coffee provides (Hints on Diet, p. 510).

8. Because these stimulants produce such pleasant transient results,
many people think they really need them and continue to take them.
But there is always a reaction. The nervous system, having been
unduly stimulated, drew strength from the reserves for immediate
employment (Gems of the Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 418).

10. When the organism is already overtaxed and in need of rest, the
consumption of tea arouses nature, stimulates it to unnatural action
and thus diminishes its power to do its work and its capacity for
endurance; and the faculties are exhausted sooner than Heaven
intended. Tea is poisonous to the organism. The second effect of tea-
drinking is headache, sleeplessness, palpitation of the heart,
indigestion, nervous trembling, and many other ills (Gems of the
Testimonies, vol. 1, pp. 195, 196).

11. because these excitants [tea and coffee]] consume the vital forces.
Tired nerves need rest and tranquillity instead of stimulation and
overwork. Nature needs time to recover exhausted energies. When
its forces are stung by the use of stimulants one can perform more
work; but when the organism is weakened by such constant use, it
becomes more difficult to rouse the energies to the desired point. It
becomes more and more difficult to master the demand for
stimulants until the will is overcome and there seems to be no power
to refuse to satisfy so ardent and unnatural a desire, which calls for
stronger and stronger stimulants, until nature, exhausted, cannot
respond to its action (The Ministry of Healing, p. 251).

12. It is these injurious stimulants which are certainly undermining the
body and preparing the organism for acute disease, by damaging the
fine machinery of nature and demolishing its fortifications erected
against disease and premature deterioration (Testimonies, vol. 1, pp.
548,549).

13. The whole organism suffers from the use of stimulants. The nerves
become unbalanced, the liver malfunctions, the quality of the blood
and its circulation are affected, and the skin becomes inactive and
pale. The mind is also impaired. The immediate influence of these
stimulants is to excite the brain to undue activity, only to leave it
weaker and less fit for exertion. The further effect is prostration, not
only mental and physical, but moral. As a result, we see men and
women nervous, of faulty judgment and unbalanced mind. They
often manifest a hasty, impatient, accusing spirit, looking at the
faults of others as through a magnifying glass, but utterly unable to
discern their own defects (Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene,
pp. 35, 36).

14. When these tea and coffee drinkers assemble for a social party, the
effects of their pernicious habit become manifest. They all help
themselves liberally to their favourite beverages, and feeling the
stimulating influence, their tongues are loosened, and they begin the
ungodly task of speaking against each other. (Christian Temperance
and Bible Hygiene, p. 36). By the use of tea and coffee, the appetite
for tobacco is created, and tobacco fosters the appetite for liquors
(Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 563).

15. Drinking coffee is a harmful indulgence. For a time it excites the
mind . . . but the after effect is exhaustion, prostration, paralysis of
the mental, moral, and physical faculties. The mind is enervated, and
unless the habit is conquered by determined effort, the activity of the
brain is permanently diminished. (Christian Temperance and Bible
Hygiene, p. 5. Similar is also the action of coffee and many other
popular drinks. The first effect is pleasant. The nerves of the
stomach are excited, and this excitement is transmitted to the brain,
which, in turn, quickens the activity of the heart, and gives the whole
organism a certain temporary energy. Tiredness is ignored, strength
seems to have increased. The intelligence is awakened and the
imagination quickened (The Ministry of Healing, pp. 250, 251).

16. The consumption of tea and coffee is also harmful to the body. To a
certain extent, tea is intoxicating. It penetrates into the circulation
and gradually reduces the energy of body and mind. It stimulates,
excites, enlivens and hastens the movement of the living machinery,
imposing upon it an unnatural activity, and gives the drinker the
impression that he has done it a great service by infusing it with
strength. This is a mistake. Tea subtracts nervous energy and is very
weakening. When its influence is gone and the activity stimulated by
its use ceases, what is the result? A languor and weakness
corresponding to the artificial vivacity imparted by tea. When the
organism is already overtaxed and in need of rest, the consumption
of tea arouses nature, stimulates it to an unnatural action, and thus
diminishes its power to do its work and its capacity for endurance;

17. You could try giving up coffee, tea and tobacco by looking for
substitutes. Try drinking a mint tea with a squeezed lemon in the
morning. The mint will cleanse your lungs and the lemon will
provide you with a lot of vitamin C, potassium and smaller amounts
of other vitamins and minerals. Vitamin C is involved in the
production of collagen. It also has the property of improving healing,
and the function of the immune system. The m Lild: Pennyroyal
(€0.58) and chamomile (€0.63).
