5. Safety
When you’re visiting Iping, our number one priority is your safety. After a bill from Parliament was passed,
Iping followed the footsteps of London by enforcing our town’s laws. If you ever find yourself in trouble,
make sure to contact Mr. Jaffers, our town’s constable. Below is a quick snippet of what was the bill that
was passed that provides for your safety now.
Sir Robert Peel (Home Secretary of England) introduced the bill (Metropolitan Police Act) for
improving the police in and near the Metropolis to Parliament. The goal was to create a police force to
manage the social conflict resulting from the rapid urbanization and industrialization taking place in the
city of London. Peels's efforts resulted in the creation of the London Metropolitan Police. The London
Metropolitan Police is the first modern police department.

It is kind of amazing how many famous people have been in Iping, or even LIVE near Iping!
King William of Winchester owned lands in Iping long ago!
Ronald Holbrook, a Commander in the Royal Navy, himself died just outside of Iping. They even
named a town after him!
Elizabeth Blackwell (3 February 1821 – 31 May 1910) was the first woman to receive a medical
degree in the United States, as well as the first woman on the UK Medical Register. She was the first
openly identified woman to graduate from medical school, a pioneer in promoting the education of
women in medicine in the United States, and a social and moral reformer in both the United States
and in England. She lived really near Iping!
HG Wells was, of course, another famous citizen. Wells loved taking observations on the city of Iping
and other towns nearby. Many have described his works as not being of Iping, but instead of South
Harding in West Sussex. HG Wells wrote many novels such as The Invisible Man and The Time
Machine before dying in Regent's Park.
