Introduction to Unix
Chris Hoffman
Tuesday 5:00 – 8:50
Text Book: Linux – Rute User’s Tutorial and Exposition
Description
UNIX was the first true multiuser operating system, and its descendents are running on the servers that
provide much of the internet. Our study of UNIX will be through just such a descendent: Linux. We will
be examining the tools and structure of this system, and exploring its many uses in a contemporary IT
infrastructure.
Class Schedule
Each class will tentatively follow this format:
5:00pm – 6:30pm – Interactive Lecture
6:45pm – 7:00pm – Student Presentation or Interactive Lecture
7:00pm – 8:00pm – Interactive Lecture
8:15pm – 8:40pm – Interactive Lecture
8:40pm – 8:50pm – Survey
You will be expected to have read through the chapter(s) assigned for each class. It only aids your
comprehension to do so. Any material that I feel is appropriate, in addition to the text, will be provided
either in paper form, or on Blackboard.
Attendance
Though attendance does not count toward your grade, it will be taken at every class. It is in your best
interests to attend the classes, as they will provide you with what you need for the tests. I will not stick
strictly with the text, varying the knowledge conveyed with the level of demonstrated student retention.
Deadlines
Assignments
There will be a declining point ceiling for any assignments. It will decline by a rate of 10% per day
following the intended date of submission. This will continue for five (5) days, after which time no points
will be awarded for a submission. Refer to the following table for an example of how this ceiling can
impact your grade:
Date Total Points Possible Sample Student Score 1 Sample Student Score 2
Nov 1 (intended submission
date)
100 75 95
Nov 2 90 75 90
Nov 3 80 75 80
Nov 4 70 70 70
Nov 5 60 60 60
Nov 6 0 0 0
As you can see, ‘Sample Student 1’ only begins losing points additional to the original assessment of her
work if she turns in the assignment after November third.
Given this grading policy, consider the following advice: if an extra day of work will allow you to
significantly improve the quality of the material to be submitted, then you should refrain from handing in
the assignment promptly. Your grade is in your hands, and you should use your best judgment when
considering deadlines.
Tests
Tests will be administered in class, either electronically or on paper. You must be in class on the day of
the administration to take the exam. No makeups will be given.
Presentation
One of the most important competencies for operating successfully in a challenging work environment is
communication. You should be able to disseminate knowledge to your collegues effectively, especially
concerning technical topics.
The presentation will consist of exploring and explaining the usage of one of the core UNIX tools
available to a systems administrator. Most importantly you will demonstrate scenarios in which the tool
would be used.
A list of possible topics will be presented at the first class, and you must decide on a topic and a date by
the following class.
Please keep presentations from ten (10) to fifteen (15) minutes. I will enforce the maximum, and your
grade will reflect a failure to meet the minimum.
Survey
Just as you expect to be evaluated throughout the semester, I would like you to evaluate my efforts to
instruct you. I will use this feedback to help guide instruction for the classes following, and for
subsequent semesters. You will be benefiting yourself and future students by earnest participation.
I will set up a survey system for your usage throughout the semester, and will provide time for you to fill
out this survey during class.
Of course, you needn’t restrict your comments to this medium. I am happy to receive feedback in person,
on the phone, or via email. I of course expect this feedback to be respectful.
Grading
The final grade will be assigned as a percentage of your assignments and tests.
Work Product Percentage
Homework and Classwork 30%
Tests 40%
Presentation 20%
Survey 10%
Grades will be posted on Blackboard.
Extra credit will not be awarded.
