This document examines how society in the 1960s influenced media representations of teenagers. It asks questions about key aspects of 1960s culture and teenage portrayals in the 1950s to understand how the decade shaped teenage images in the media.
British social realism films are typically independently produced and demonstrate a commitment to specific political ideas. The way a film is made ("practice") helps validate the ideas it presents. British social realism filmmakers reacted against mainstream films and conventions, often commenting on or breaking from traditional practices. Their films had a unique social purpose and their commitments were reflected in their practices, such as using non-professional actors and location shooting due to low budgets. The content of social realism films was meant to offer insights into socio-historical contexts and present reformist or educative messages about important social issues of the time.
YouTube is a video sharing website created in 2005 by three former PayPal employees that allows users to upload, share, and view videos. Google acquired YouTube for $1.65 billion in 2006. While the site is free to use and can be educational, it has faced criticism for failing to curb copyright violations as well as the uploading of offensive, pornographic, and criminal content, despite terms of service prohibiting such material.

Myspace was created in 2003 and was quickly popularized by its parent company eUniverse's large user base. By late 2007, Myspace had become the leading social networking site. However, security flaws and incidents like cyberbullying led to negative press, and Myspace declined while Facebook rose to become the dominant social media platform. Myspace was also used by predators to meet and assault minors, as in a 2006 case where a 22-year-old man met and raped a 14-year-old girl he connected with on Myspace.

Smart Data for Smart Meters - Presentation at Pilod2 Meeting 2013-11-13Wouter Beek
On 2013-11-13 I gave a presentation on the use of the energy labels dataset of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. I first turned their XML dataset into 5-star LOD (by linking it to the BAG) and then created a Web application that runs on top of it.
The document summarizes the first "AI winter" that occurred in the 1970s. It describes how unrealistic predictions, limitations identified by studies such as intractability and the commonsense knowledge problem, and arguments around disability and informality led to pessimism in the research community, negative press, and cancellation of funding for AI projects in both the US and Europe. This first major downturn in funding and research on AI technologies established a cyclical pattern that has repeated with other emerging fields.
This document provides an overview of agents and rationality in artificial intelligence from the 1990s. It discusses key concepts like rational agents perceiving their environment and acting through sensors and actuators. Rational agents are defined as those that consider all possible actions and consequences to make optimal decisions given their goals and environment. The document also covers agent architectures like model-based agents that use internal models to select actions, as well as multi-agent systems and examples like the Prisoner's Dilemma.
This document provides an overview of the history of ideas around artificial intelligence from ancient times to 1950. Some of the key themes and developments discussed include:
- Ancient texts that describe early machines and the relationship between humans and machines, including themes of imitation, competition, and control.
- Early machines and automata developed between the 2nd century BC to the 13th century AD, including early mechanical computers and automated devices.
- Developments in the 17th-18th centuries that explored formalizing reasoning and attempting to mechanize logic and computation.
- Alan Turing's 1950 paper where he proposes the "Turing Test" as a way to determine if a machine can be considered intelligent by having humans interact

This document outlines the requirements for a summer work case study on how a particular media genre represents youth over time. Students must choose a genre such as TV dramas, films, or music and analyze the portrayal of teenagers in at least 3 texts from different eras. For each text, they need detailed knowledge, scene analyses, and character profiles. Students also need to consider the societal context of each era and include related news articles. The final portfolio requires 10-12 pages of in-depth research and written analysis.
This document outlines the requirements for a summer work project on media representations of youth over time. Students must produce an in-depth case study and portfolio on a specific media genre, analyzing how teenagers are portrayed in at least 3 texts from different eras. The portfolio requires detailed character profiles and scene analyses, contextual information on the societal and historical events of each era, related news articles, and quotes from media studies texts to support the analysis of teenage representations.

The 1980s saw major developments in music, entertainment, and technology. Michael Jackson became the first black artist featured on MTV in 1981. Thriller by Michael Jackson and E.T. were both released in 1982 to great success. Nintendo released the first video game console in 1985. Unemployment reached record highs in the UK in 1986 even as popular sitcoms like Only Fools and Horses rose in popularity.

Introduction of Cybersecurity with OSS at Code Europe 2024Hiroshi SHIBATA
I develop the Ruby programming language, RubyGems, and Bundler, which are package managers for Ruby. Today, I will introduce how to enhance the security of your application using open-source software (OSS) examples from Ruby and RubyGems.
The first topic is CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures). I have published CVEs many times. But what exactly is a CVE? I'll provide a basic understanding of CVEs and explain how to detect and handle vulnerabilities in OSS.
Next, let's discuss package managers. Package managers play a critical role in the OSS ecosystem. I'll explain how to manage library dependencies in your application.
I'll share insights into how the Ruby and RubyGems core team works to keep our ecosystem safe. By the end of this talk, you'll have a better understanding of how to safeguard your code.
