Dim Weight Pricing Concept Volume based pricing strategy Ensures large, bulky items are invoiced according to the space they occupy Transport companies get paid properly for the service they provide Customers receive a fair invoice Should these parcels cost the same to ship?
Background of Dim Weight Pricing Dimensional Weight Rates introduced by European express companies in 1988 Based on the International Air Transport Association (IATA) standards Many smaller companies still don’t use dimensional weight pricing Various European Parcel Carriers / Postal Organisations FedEx 1990 1995 2000 2005 DHL TNT UPS DPWN Various European Parcel Carriers / Postal Organisations FedEx 1990 1995 2000 2005 DHL TNT UPS DPWN
Why Charge by Volume? Although the un-popped kernels weigh more, the popped popcorn takes up more space in a vehicle By charging for the dimensional weight of the popped popcorn, you get paid for the space it takes up in your truck Space is a Scarce Asset – Charge for it! POPPED POPCORN 5 KG 60 x 60 x 60 cm Dimensional Weight = 36 KG 30 x 30 x 30 cm Dimensional weight = 4.5 KG POPCORN KERNELS 5 KG
Why Charge by Volume? Vehicles often fill up before they reach their weight limitation Include the Actual Size in the Price
How to Calculate Dim Weight Determine an object’s cubic size (L x W x H) Divide by a dimensional factor Compare actual weight with dimensional weight Use the greater of the two as billable weight L x W x H ÷dim factor = dim weight Invoicing Should Reflect Actual Transport Costs
Dim Weight vs. Actual Weight The low density of this package means the carrier will earn 40% more if they charge based on dim weight H = 8cm W = 60 cm L= 90cm 5 Kg Dimensions 90 x 60 x 8 cm = 43 200cm³ Dimensional factor 6000 cm³/ kg Dim Weight 7.2 Kg Actual Weight 5 Kg Billable Weight 7.2 Kg
Maximize Revenue Potential If you ship a lot of low density objects and charge solely by actual weight there is huge potential to… Increase your Revenue
Agenda Increase Revenue with Dimensional Weight Pricing Transparency with Automatic Measuring Building Customer Trust About Cargoscan™ from METTLER TOLEDO
Automatic Measuring Some carriers invoice according to dimensions but only measure goods manually Automatic Measuring is needed to ensure Accurate Data for Correct Invoicing Dimensional Weight Pricing Automatic Measuring Maximized Revenue Potential A Two Pronged Approach
Transparency with Automatic Measuring Measuring parcels and pallets automatically gives you full control over your operation All data is stored and easily retrieved Statistics are easily generated Paperwork is reduced
Transparency with Automatic Measuring Verified Measurements Correct, Explainable Invoices Repeatable Results Sorting & Tracking Optimal Use of Resources Ensure Customer Trust
Weights & Measures Approvals Ensures the Reliability of your Systems Gives Customer Peace of Mind Mandatory in Many Countries Becoming More and More Important MID Meet Regulatory Compliance
Image Capture Cameras can be interfaced with your dimensioner to take a picture of each parcel or pallet Protects you against damage claims and during Audits Can act as proof that each package has been measured automatically with a W&M Approved System Avoid Customer Disputes
The Problem with Manual Measuring Risk of recording inaccurate data and generating wrong invoices Customer Insecurity Can’t ensure repeatable results Time consuming Human error Money is lost through unnecessary labour, human error and damage to customer trust Manual Measuring is NOT Cost Efficient

Editor's Notes

  • #13 While a switch to dimensional weight pricing will ensure carriers get paid properly for the space in their vehicles, manual measuring isn’t necessarily good enough. In order to really maximize revenue potential and ensure you are paid for every inch of space, you should leverage from an automatic measuring system.
  • #18 With an automatic dimensioner you are ensured accurate results every time. You get paid properly for the space you provide and your customer can be sure their invoice is correct.
  • #20 Customer will receive a correct invoice everytime. Sometimes invoices will be lower than expected and they will know they can trust your measurements and your company.
  • #23 A dimensional weight pricing structure means that customers of large, lightweight items are invoiced according to the relatively large amount of space their shipment requires. It is therefore in the interest of your customers to condense consignments as much as possible. It is typical that deliveries arrive in boxes that are too big; fragile goods may be wrapped in excessive bubble wrap and frequently outer cartons are filled mostly with air. Being somewhat penalised for such items will encourage denser packing and reduced use of packaging materials. Carriers won’t then be accused of ‘moving air’ which is not cost effective and has a negative impact on the environment. Denser packing also means less movement of goods within the boxes, reducing the risk of damage during handling. We are constantly being asked to evaluate the environmental impact of our actions. While the challenges faced by the transport industry in this regard don’t end here, by switching to automatic dimensioning you are doing your bit to reduce emissions. An automatic dimensioning solution is an investment you can make to increase revenue, while keeping your conscience clear.
