Four interesting points about myself
Hello, for those of you who do not yet know me, my name is Aidan Patrick Sheppard Flynn.
• Graduated from an accelerated master’s programme at the Glasgow University in Scotland. I'm
getting increasingly homesick under this relentlessly pleasant weather. Although yesterday's
storm provided a welcome reprieve.
• Because of this I have decided to use this opertunity share with you all (ya'll) some of the things
I miss most about Glasgow.
• Glasgow is where my main man Adam Smith graduated from in 1737 (he was 14 though so he
wins)
o Had to do nine exams over two days
o Incidentally, I had an interview with a political consultant in which I got dissed for
preferring Adam Smith over Hayek or Keynes (Hayek is right wing, Keynes is left wing for
future reference)
• I miss Glasgow
o Its an Old city, who's long story is full of Vikings and Royalty but basically the city was
founded in the 680’s as the religious Center of a newly formed kingdom of Strathclyde.
o Even most scots don’t realize it, but in the 1100s while Europe was struggling with the
dark ages or were busy crusading, Glaswegians were forming the United Kingdom of
Scotland, a brief experiment in national unity, not to be repeated until the birth of the
British Empire.
• Had to leave Scotland because the government wouldn’t allow my lovely Georgian wife to move
back (she’s too foreign)
o Feel like the British government is still upset about 1776
o To be fair the American government won’t let me vote for at least 5 years while paying
taxes. It’s safe to say that Mr. Sam wants me to know how it felt for the founding fathers
to pay tax without a voice in Parliament.
 Although as an economic historian I can say it eould be much cheaper to pay a
stamp tax than have to deal with the IRS, just saying.
• I do miss home but the pictures I have shown you were only possible due to the wealth created
from trade with America particularly in the tobacco.
• Also not many people know this but in Britain most prime ministers or general successful people
preface their careers with time spent in America.
Thank you very much for listening I hope I didn't get to soppy about back home. Thanks again!
