1. I AM A WORRIED MAN
In me there’s a burning desire to represent my people, the Kenyan people in a political office at some
point in this life but I am a worried man. I am not oblivious of my limitations; a lack of platform, a family
“name”, a political godfather or a huge bank account to back my political ambitions – No, all these worry
me less. What I am worried of is one day sitting in August House with the current crop of politicians
whose interest are selfish and have lost the vision carried by our forbearers. What these cynics fail to
understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them and that the stale political arguments that have
consumed us for so long no longer apply
We the people of Kenya have remained faithful to the ideals of the dream of our founding documents
but unfortunately every time, now and then we have failed to elect people of integrity to the high
offices. We are in the midst of self induced crisis as a result of our own irresponsibility and greed. The far
reaching network of tribal hatred and our collective failure to make hard choices that could prepare our
nation for a new age of socio-political and economic prosperity have shuttered this God loving country.
I am reminded of a story about a certain frog that kept gloating, claiming that all the waters therein
were his. He bragged and walked abrasively denying all his compatriots an opportunity to swim and
have a feel of water; and so they left. Little did he know that this water was in a pun and underneath
there was huge fire boiling the water. He sat unbothered enjoying the warmth initially and by the time
he realized the truth about his predicament it was late and so he died in his foolish gloat. This is our
political class for you.
They pushed for Hague knowing that it was too far and was never to come anytime soon. They
advocated for it, signed and ratified not because they ever wanted true justice but merely because they
felt that the process for justice in Hague was along and an unending one. The waters have become hot
and unbearable; the truth has caught them off guard at unexpected high velocity. The moment is a
painful truth has come.
I hope that one day our public offices with be filled by men and women of integrity, unscathed by the
marring mud of corruption, tribalism, nepotism and all evil present in our current system.
