He who is regulated in his habits of eating,
sleeping, recreation and work can mitigate all
material pains by practicing the yoga system.

increase the duration of life, purify one's existence
and give strength, health, happiness and satisfaction.
Such foods are juicy, fatty, wholesome, and pleasing
to the heart.

to those in the mode of passion. Such
foods cause distress, misery and
disease.

O son of Bharata, know that the mode of
darkness, born of ignorance, is the
delusion of all embodied living entities. The
results of this mode are madness,
indolence and sleep, which bind the
conditioned soul.
IGNORANCE (3rd class)

O chief of the Bhäratas, when there is an
increase in the mode of passion the
symptoms of great attachment, fruitive
activity, intense endeavor, and uncontrollable
desire and hankering develop.

PASSION (2nd class)
O sinless one, the mode of goodness, being
purer than the others, is illuminating, and it
frees one from all sinful reactions. Those
situated in that mode become conditioned by
a sense of happiness and knowledge.

PRACTICE DETACHMENT
Do thou fight for the sake of fighting, without
considering happiness or distress, loss or
gain, victory or defeat- and by so doing you
shall never incur sin.

consider yourself the cause of the results of your
activities, and never be attached to not doing your
duty.

That happiness which is blind to self‐realization,
which is delusion from beginning to end and
which arises from sleep, laziness and illusion is
said to be of the nature of ignorance.

OF ACTIONS

But action performed with great effort by
one seeking to gratify his desires, and
enacted from a sense of false ego, is called
action in the mode of passion.

of scriptural injunctions, and without concern

and when intelligence is lost one falls down

  • 9. Foods that are too bitter, too sour, salty, hot, pungent, dry and burning are dear to those in the mode of passion. Such foods cause distress, misery and disease. BG 17.9
  • 10. Food prepared more than three hours before being eaten, food that is tasteless, decomposed and putrid, and food consisting of remnants and untouchable things is dear to those in the mode of darkness. BG 18.9

  • 14. O son of Bharata, know that the mode of darkness, born of ignorance, is the delusion of all embodied living entities. The results of this mode are madness, indolence and sleep, which bind the conditioned soul. IGNORANCE (3rd class) BG 14.8
  • 15. O chief of the Bhäratas, when there is an increase in the mode of passion the symptoms of great attachment, fruitive activity, intense endeavor, and uncontrollable desire and hankering develop. BG 14.12 PASSION (2nd class)
  • 16. O sinless one, the mode of goodness, being purer than the others, is illuminating, and it frees one from all sinful reactions. Those situated in that mode become conditioned by a sense of happiness and knowledge. GOODNESS (1st class) BG 14.6
  • 17. LESSON 2: PRACTICE DETACHMENT Do thou fight for the sake of fighting, without considering happiness or distress, loss or gain, victory or defeat- and by so doing you shall never incur sin. BG 2.38
  • 18. You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action. Never consider yourself the cause of the results of your activities, and never be attached to not doing your duty. LESSON 2 (Contd.) BG 2.47
  • 19. Those who are on this path are resolute in purpose, and their aim is one. O beloved child of the Kurus, the intelligence of those who are irresolute is many-branched. LESSON 3: CLARITY OF GOALS BG 2.49
  • 20. The embodied soul may be restricted from sense enjoyment, though the taste for sense objects remains. But, ceasing such engagements by experiencing a higher taste, he is fixed in consciousness. LESSON 4: DEVELOP HIGHER TASTE OF PLEASURE BG 2.59
  • 21. That happiness which is blind to self‐realization, which is delusion from beginning to end and which arises from sleep, laziness and illusion is said to be of the nature of ignorance. LESSON 4 (Contd.) BG 18.37 3rd class pleasure
  • 22. That happiness which is derived from contact of the senses with their objects and which appears like nectar at first but poison at the end is said to be of the nature of passion. LESSON 4 (Contd.) BG 18.38 2nd class pleasure
  • 23. That which in the beginning may be just like poison but at the end is just like nectar and which awakens one to self-realization is said to be happiness in the mode of goodness. LESSON 4 (Contd.) BG 18.37 1st class pleasure
  • 24. That action which is regulated and which is performed without attachment, without love or hatred, and without desire for fruitive results is said to be in the mode of goodness. LESSON 5: MINDFULNESS OF ACTIONS BG 18.23
  • 25. But action performed with great effort by one seeking to gratify his desires, and enacted from a sense of false ego, is called action in the mode of passion. LESSON 5 (Contd.) BG 18.24
  • 26. That action performed in illusion, in disregard of scriptural injunctions, and without concern for future bondage or for violence or distress caused to others is said to be in the mode of ignorance. LESSON 5 (Contd.) BG 18.25
  • 27. While contemplating the objects of the senses, a person develops attachment for them, and from such attachment lust develops, and from lust anger arises. LESSON 6: ANGER MANAGEMENT BG 2.62
  • 28. From anger, complete delusion arises, and from delusion bewilderment of memory. When memory is bewildered, intelligence is lost, and when intelligence is lost one falls down again into the material pool. LESSON 6 (Contd.) BG 2.63
