How reliable are value judgements about health inequality aversion? Results o...cheweb1
(1) The document describes two experimental studies that investigated how people express preferences about health inequality.
(2) The first study tested whether different questionnaire formats and administration methods influenced responses about inequality aversion. It found some evidence that concrete scenarios and online administration led to less egalitarian views.
(3) The second study examined whether "slow thinking" interventions during the questionnaire affected expressed inequality aversion.
Richer but poorer in health? The income gradient in chronic conditions: evide...cheweb1
The document analyzes the relationship between income and hypertension in South Africa using national survey data. It finds that wealthier men are more likely to be hypertensive, while there is no income gradient for women. It also finds no evidence of an income gradient in unawareness of hypertensive status. The high rate of unawareness among hypertensive South Africans points to missed opportunities for screening. Improving screening for hypertension is an urgent priority given its high prevalence in South Africa.
Evaluation of health technologies in France: from theory to practice cheweb1
1) The document discusses economic evaluation of health technologies in France, outlining reforms that have strengthened the role of the French National Health Board (HAS) in conducting economic assessments.
2) Reforms in 2008 and 2012 gave HAS legal authority to produce economic guidance on pricing for new technologies alongside its clinical assessments.
3) HAS now produces efficiency guidance within 90 days of new technology submissions to inform pricing decisions, assessing expected cost-effectiveness and budget impact.
CHE Economic Evaluation Seminar presentation 17th September 2015, Edit Remak,...cheweb1
This document introduces real options analysis (ROA) and real options games (ROG) as approaches to health technology assessment that explicitly consider multiple decision points and uncertainty over time. It discusses how ROA allows flexibility in timing, scope, and abandonment of investments under uncertainty. A ROG combines ROA and game theory to model strategic interactions between decision makers like coverage, pricing, and research actors. The document uses drug-eluting stents versus bare metal stents as a case study, modeling it as a two-player sequential game between manufacturer and payer to demonstrate how ROG can assess health technologies.

1) The document discusses using a simulation model to study the potential impact of increased HIV testing rates and changes to when antiretroviral therapy (ART) is initiated on HIV incidence in men who have sex with men (MSM) in the UK.
2) The model results suggest that increasing testing rates and initiating ART at diagnosis could reduce annual new HIV infections by up to 64% by 2030, but ongoing high levels of condomless sex and poorer adherence to ART treatment may limit these prevention benefits.
3) For HIV incidence to fall below 1 per 1000 people per year, the analysis finds that the proportion of all MSM with suppressed viral loads would need to increase from the current approximately 60%

This document discusses using anchoring vignettes to address reporting heterogeneity in patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) like the EQ-5D-5L. It conducted two stages of research: 1) a qualitative study that found rating health vignettes for the EQ-5D-5L was feasible but response consistency needed improvement, and 2) a quantitative study using surveys of 4000 Australians that developed two health vignettes and used hierarchical ordered probit modeling to test for differential item functioning across age, gender, education and other groups when rating health status. The research aims to determine if anchoring vignettes can identify reporting heterogeneity in the EQ-5D-5L and help make more valid cross-group

This document discusses alternative methods for projecting survival outcomes in technology assessments beyond what is observed in clinical trials.
The standard method of fitting parametric survival functions to trial data and extrapolating is problematic as it assumes a single mechanism and does not account for trial design or changes in risk over time. LRiG proposes examining trial data to understand risk trajectories and formulating hypotheses based on clinical context rather than selecting a model solely on fit. A case study demonstrates modeling progression-free survival, post-progression survival, and overall survival as separate phases using exponential convolution functions. LRiG advocates understanding empirical data and developing more informative multi-phase models rather than relying on standard projections.

This seminar will demonstrate the potential of multi-state survival modeling (MSM) as a tool for decision analytic modelling and compare it to the usual Markov transition modelling approach. After briefly reviewing examples of MSM in the health economics literature, a technology appraisal submitted to NICE evaluating the cost effectiveness of Rituximab for first line treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia will be used for illustration purposes. Finally, areas of future research will be outlined.
This document summarizes the key points of a presentation on mechanism-based pharmacoeconomic modelling. It discusses two main types of economic modelling: empirical modelling which uses statistical techniques to find parameter values that maximize correlation with observed data, and mechanism-based modelling which uses fundamental knowledge to define model structure and experiments to determine parameter values. It then provides examples of applying mechanism-based pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic models integrated with economic evaluations for rituximab and novel oral anticoagulants for atrial fibrillation. The results suggest genotype-guided warfarin dosing and newer anticoagulants like apixaban provide better outcomes and may be cost-effective alternatives to clinically dosed warfar

Comparative hospital performance data can be used for two main purposes: 1) to identify general poor performance among hospitals, and 2) to inform quality improvement initiatives for specific conditions. This document analyzes data on chest pain presentations across four hospitals. It finds variations in costs, outcomes, and processes of care across the hospitals. Specifically, one hospital had higher costs, readmission rates, and length of stay compared to the benchmark hospital. Analyzing the data by patient subgroups found some of the variations were driven by differences in patients seen after hours with existing conditions. The document discusses potential strategies for using this type of comparative data to incentivize hospitals to reduce unwarranted variations in performance.

“After being the most listed dog breed in the United States for 31
years in a row, the Labrador Retriever has dropped to second place
in the American Kennel Club's annual survey of the country's most
popular canines. The French Bulldog is the new top dog in the
United States as of 2022. The stylish puppy has ascended the
rankings in rapid time despite having health concerns and limited

Best practices for project execution and deliveryCLIVE MINCHIN
A select set of project management best practices to keep your project on-track, on-cost and aligned to scope. Many firms have don't have the necessary skills, diligence, methods and oversight of their projects; this leads to slippage, higher costs and longer timeframes. Often firms have a history of projects that simply failed to move the needle. These best practices will help your firm avoid these pitfalls but they require fortitude to apply.
2. The fear of most people who travel
abroad is the high cost of data roaming. If
you’re one of these people, you shouldn’t
live with this kind of fear. This is because
there are several ways by which you can
avoid paying extremely expensive data
charges.
First and foremost, don’t ever forget to turn off your phone’s data roaming when
you’re not using it. This is perhaps the wisest and easiest way to get lesser charges.
Remember to only turn on the data roaming when you’re in a Wi-Fi hot spot. This
allows you to use the Internet without being charged by your service provider of
high roaming costs.
Next, you can rent a portable Wi-Fi device. This is a better option if you’ll not be
hanging around Internet cafes and hotel loungers that have free Wi-Fi in them.
There are quite a number of smartphone rental companies that provide pocket-
sized Wi-Fi devices that can easily connect to 3G signals.
What’s even better about this equipment is that other Wi-Fi ready devices can
connect to this device for some Internet connection.
Then, you can also get a data package from your service provider. This should be
an international data package since this would allow you
to roam at low prepaid rates. There are already a lot of
companies today who offer you with such service.
Fourth, you can go and buy an international SIM card or
otherwise known as the global SIM card. This cute chip
2:Data Roaming Charges
3. card allows you to surf the net using your smartphone without having to worry
about high costs. A good example of which is a USA SIM card that lets you do
USA roaming even when you don’t have a USA cell phone.
Fifth, you can just choose to go to an internet shop when you want to surf or
browse the internet. This is a good option only if you really want to have a
vacation that’s free from any work hassle. But if you are on a business trip, then
this might not work for you because there’s no guarantee that you can easily find
internet shops in the place you’ll visit.
Sixth, you can buy a local SIM card. This is advisable if you are visiting only one
country or area. The local SIM card is great because the rate for data roaming is
local and it follow the minimum charge of that area.
Now these are all the options that you have so you’ll not be surprised when your
phone bill arrives the next month.
