Bankruptcy allows individuals to eliminate or restructure certain debts. The individual can choose to either file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which eliminates most debts but not student loans or taxes, or Chapter 13 bankruptcy, which sets up a repayment plan but prevents wage garnishment or asset seizure. Filing for bankruptcy will negatively impact an individual's credit for 7-10 years.
