The Olmec culture was one of the earliest Mesoamerican cultures, emerging around 1200 BCE in an area of southern Mexico that is now Veracruz and Tabasco. They built large ceremonial centers like San Lorenzo and La Venta, erected colossal stone heads that may have represented rulers, and had sophisticated arts like jade carvings. The Olmec influenced later cultures across Mesoamerica with innovations like the Mesoamerican ballgame, calendrical systems, and hieroglyphic writing.
