Editor's Notes
Good Evening. First, I want to thank all of you in this room who serve our country, and all who are here to support those that do. Working on HonorVet over the last 15 months has been the most gratifying, challenging and inspiring thing I have ever done. We are not there yet, but we are close to launching something that we believe can really make a difference for millions of the very best of America’s citizens. But it is ultimately your faith and support that will make that possible. So thank you.Jesse asked me to spend a few minutes tonight explaining exactly what it is we have been building and what, with your support, we will complete over the next few months. I would like to apologize in advance for some of the techno-geek speak you will have to suffer through, and promise that there will NOT be a quiz when we are done!
So what is HonorVet.org today? HonorVet.org today is what Geeks like me call an “Alpha” release. Regular people call that “NOT FINISHED”! The basic structure is built, but there is still much to do. We focused first on basic community and communications features that are the foundation of the HonorVet vision. When you look at these, you can already see some of the things make HonorVet unique. As a COMMUNITY, Honorvet will be kind of like a mix of Facebook and LinkedIn. But different. It is meant to be a Purpose-Driven Community, not a social network. The HONORVET MEMBER INVITATION AND AUTHENTICATION SYSTEM is also a bit different. A critical aspect of HonorVet is that it is a membership community built to serve Veterans, Service Members and Military Families. We will also have room for many Guests, but only those who wish to come to help and support the HonorVet mission.
Over the next 6 months, HonorVet.org is building version 1.0 and then v. 1.5 – our first fully functional and complete release of the HonorVet vision.Key elements of this are:Additional features to support the TRUSTED COMMUNITY aspects of HonorVet2. A video portal to SHARE KNOWLEDGE and support INFORMAL LEARNINGA MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR PROFESSIONAL SERVICES PROVIDED TO MEMBERSAn integrated COMMUNICATIONS PLATFORM – E-mail, Chat, Voice, Video, etc.
But HonorVet.org is much more than a bunch of nice software features. The Veteran Community, which is rich in leadership skills, strong work ethics, integrity and teamwork. The American People, who have been asking for the last 10 years: What can I do to help?
In Geek Parlance, HonorVet will be a WEB 2.0 ORGANIZATIONWhat does that mean? We like to say that HonorVet will be more like WikiPedia than The United Way. That’s an oversimplification. But the relevant analogy is that Wikipedia has thousands of volunteer editors and hundreds of thousands of contributors that make it one of the most useful and USED sites on the Web. Yet all of this is run by an organization of perhaps 40 people. That is the leverage of the Web 2.0 Model.
HonorVet’s Web Platform will then LEVERAGE the organization’s core functions by seamlessly integrating with networks of:Partner service providersVolunteers Leaders within the Honorvet community.
I said earlier that we think of HonorVet is a PURPOSE-DRIVEN COMMUNITY. What is our purpose? It is to help our members move forward with their lives and goals. One thing that Jesse and Jimmy learned from their own experiences and friends it is that it is very hard to know where to start. And you really can’t fix one part of your life, such as getting a job, if another part is still broken – such as being depressed. So based on this understanding – and guidance from top experts such as Dr. Harms, who you just heard from - HonorVet is implementing a unique HOLISTIC approach, providing information, guidance, coaching and even professional services across four key areas of challenge. MENTAL & EMOTIONAL HEALTH SERVICES SPIRITUAL COUNSELING & GUIDANCEEMPLOYMENT & CAREER SERVICES HEALTH & WELLNESS SUPPORT
Professional Services will be provided by partner service providers – initially companies and later also accredited and screened individual service providers.
Volunteers are the next circle in the HonorVet Network. These are individuals – both Veterans and civilians – who donate their time and expertise from home, office - or even on-the-go through their smart phones and iPads - using the HonorVet Web Platform and Network.Volunteers willprovide: Guidance Mentoring & Coaching Curation of Information & Resources
Volunteers will be able to start or join and then take leadership roles in HonorVetInterest Groups. These are hubs thatprovide: Curated InformationLinks to resourcesHuman knowledge with HonorVet Coaches and Guides
Interest Groups and the COACHES and GUIDES that run them will also serve as efficient channels to screen and connect HonorVet members to appropriate professional service providers when needed.
The final circle is the HonorVet community itself. HonorVet is not Facebook. Rather it is focused on providing the forum and tools for HonorVet members to gather, connect, organize and empower themselves and each other.
So to put this all together, when fully developed, HonorVet.org will be aPurpose Driven Communitybuilt on a powerful Web platform and leveraging a Web 2.0 organizational model and Holistic approach to help Veterans, Service Members and Military Families to move forward in their lives and goals.Thank you so much for your time and your support.
