The Tambora volcano located in Indonesia erupted in 1815, emitting an ash cloud that spread over 600 km and blocked the sun for two days. The eruption directly killed 12,000 people and contributed to the deaths of 49,000 more on nearby islands by destroying crops and causing starvation. It was one of the largest eruptions in recorded world history.
