Hip hop originated in the South Bronx in the 1970s, developing from block parties thrown by DJ Kool Herc where he played funk and soul music breaks. The culture consists of four main elements - DJing, emceeing, breaking, and graffiti. DJs would isolate the instrumental portion of songs, known as breaks, for dancers. Emcees would rap over the music. Graffiti was used by youth to make statements about society. The culture gained widespread popularity in the 1980s and experienced a resurgence in the 1990s, spawning genres like gangsta rap and conscious rap.
