INTRODUCTION
*Herbal products are safe because they are natural and can be harmful if
consumed improperly or in excessive amounts
*Cosmeceuticals are cosmetic products with biologically active
ingredients purporting to have medical or drug‐like benefits. These are
the ingredient with medicinal properties that manifests beneficial topical
actions and provides protection against degenerative skin conditions.
*Cosmeceuticals improve appearance by delivering nutrients necessary
for healthy skin.

Definition of Cosmetics
*According to D & C Act in 1940
*Any article intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled or sprayed on or
introduced to or applied to any part of human body for cleansing,
beautifying, promoting, attractiveness or altering the appearance and
includes any article intended for use as component of cosmetics.
*Included in this definition are products such as skin moisturizers,
perfumes, lipsticks, fingernail polishes, eye and facial makeup
preparations, shampoos, permanent waves, hair colours, toothpastes,
and deodorants, as well as any material intended for use as a
component of a cosmetic product.

Advantage of Herbal
Cosmetics
*They do not provoke allergic reaction & do not have negative
side effects.
*They are easily incorporated with skin and hair.
*With small quantity they are very effective as compared to
synthetic cosmetics.
*Easily available & found in large variety & quantity.

*Herbal drugs have slower effects as compare to Allopathic dosage
form. Also it requires long term therapy.
*They are difficult to hide taste and odour.
*Manufacturing process are time consuming and complicated.
*No pharmacopoeia defines any specific procedure or ingredients to
be used in any of herbal cosmetics.

Herbal ingredient used in
oral care…
*Herbal remedies have a long history of use for gum and tooth
problems. In many traditional cultures, there are no plastic-
bristle brushes, rather, the use of herbal "chewing sticks" are
common.
*Chewing sticks are usually taken from plants, shrubs or trees with
high anti-microbial activity. The ends of selected sticks are
shredded and they are used to massage the gums and "floss" the
teeth.

a dentifrice.
*Tormentil & sage = use as a gargle for chronic gum inflammation.

Essential oils
Essential oils (EOs) are distilled liquids extracted from flowers, leaves,
bark, stems, roots, shrubs and trees.
The effectiveness of EOs lies in their exceptional ability to penetrate
human tissue and provide therapeutic benefits.
 EOs contain varying numbers of tiny aromatic molecules that rapidly
absorb into skin and travel through the body via blood capillaries and
the circulatory system.
When used in herbal dental care, EOs are absorbed deep into gum
tissue where their potent antibacterial properties provide valuable
benefits in the treatment of gum disease.

The essential oils:
1) Red Thyme-
*The oil from this herb has been used extensively in medicine as a powerful
antiseptic and disinfectant.
*Additionally, its antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial
and stimulating properties help treat oral inflammation and infection,
making it a powerful additive to herbal dental products.
2) Cinnamon Bark-
*The high aldehyde content of this oil makes it a strong antimicrobial and
antiseptic.
*High in tannins, cinnamon bark is an astringent, which in turn provides
valuable benefits.
*Astringents contract, firm and strengthen oral tissue, reduce surface
inflammation and irritation, and create a protective barrier from infection.
*Cinnamon oil is widely recognized as a painkiller and has long been used to
soothe toothaches.

*Indigenous to Australia, eucalyptus has one of the most widely
recognizable aromas.
*It is commonly used as the active ingredient in vapor rubs because
it aids respiratory function.
*In addition, eucalyptus boasts antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic
and stimulant properties, which boost circulation and speed up the
healing process.
4) Peppermint-
*The oil from this plant provides antibacterial, anti-inflammatory,
antifungal, antimicrobial, antiseptic, sedative and stimulant
properties.
*While peppermint flavoring is one of the most common additives
used in commercial toothpaste and mouthwash, the majority of
these products do not contain the essential oil itself.
