This document outlines new requirements for heat treated pallets used to store and transport pharmaceutical raw materials and components at ILC Dover Supply Chain facilities. Effective June 10, 2013, only clean heat treated pallets stamped with ISPM 15 - HT can be used for pharmaceutical materials. Pharmaceutical materials must be kept separate from non-pharmaceutical items and cannot be stored next to non-heat treated pallets. The changes are being implemented to comply with customers' strict cleanliness standards due to the critical nature of their work. ISPM 15 heat treated pallets undergo high temperature treatment to prevent the spread of insects and disease between countries.

2. Why and What is this all about?
Why are these new processes being put into place?
Many of ILC customers require a very strict standard of cleanliness due to
the nature of the critical work they perform. In order for us to gain their
trust and business we must comply with these requests.
What are ISPM 15 hear treated pallets and how do they function compared to a
regular pallet?
ISPM – International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures # 15 is a
measure developed by the IPPC – International Plant Protection Convention
– that directly addresses the need to treat wood material of a thickness
greater than 6mm used to ship material and product between countries. Its
main purpose is to prevent the international transport and spread of
disease and insects that could negatively infect plants, trees or the
ecosystems.
ISPM Heat Treated pallets are heated until its core temperature reaches
133 degrees for at least 30 minutes. This procedure can only be conducted
by a certified company.
After the wood is effectively heated a special seal call a “wheat stamp” is
placed on the pallet.

3. Continued
There is a secondary method to treat pallets to prevent the spread of
insects and disease. This secondary method is through a fumigation
process. In this process the pallet is saturated with a chemical called
“Methyl Bromide”. After fumigation, a similar “wheat seal” is placed on the
pallet – however this seal is slightly different.
IMPORTANT: Methyl Bromide treated pallets are never to be used in the ILC
supply chain. They may omit an odor to can potentially contaminate our
products.
