Contracting head lice may be a rite of passage for many young students, as relatively few kids finish their elementary years without being affected due to the nature of lice and how they spread. Lice have basically been living on and around humans since the beginning of time. They are so ingrained in human history that the everyday expressions such as “lousy”, “nit-picking”, and “going over something with a fine-toothed comb” all stem from lice infestations!
Contrary to popular belief, contracting head lice does not indicate that a person is in any way unhygienic or unclean.

While more are beginning to understand the dangers of tanning, melanoma figures continue to climb.

Snow shoveling is a known trigger for heart attacks. While shoveling snow may not lead to any health problems, the risk of a heart attack during snow shoveling may increase for some. In fact, every year about 720,000 Americans have a heart attack. Of these, 515,000 are a first heart attack and 205,000 happen in people who have already had a heart attack.
Cold temperatures increase the risk for heart attack because the arteries constrict which increases your blood pressure.

While they may develop into squamous cell carcinoma, treatments like cryosurgery, chemotherapy creams, and photodynamic therapy can destroy the abnormal cells. Preventing sun damage through sunscreen and protective clothing is the best way to avoid developing actinic keratoses.
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that occurs in melanocytes. It most commonly appears on areas of the skin that are not often exposed to sun. Early detection of melanoma through monthly skin self-examinations is important, as it can be fatal if left untreated but curable if caught early. Some warning signs of melanoma include new or changing moles, moles that are asymmetrical, have irregular borders or varied color, or a diameter larger than a pencil eraser.
