2. Surveillance means supervision or close watch especially on
suspected person.
Epidemiological surveillance means close vigilance on
occurrence and distribution of disease and health related
problems, population dynamics, community behavior and
environmental processes resulting in increased risk of ill health
in the community
3. It involves identification of missed and suspected cases, and
contacts , their confirmation of laboratory investigations,
identifying sources of infection and channels of transmission
It can be done in following levels;
A.Individual/family surveillance
B.Community/local population surveillance
C.National Level
D.International Level
4. Surveillance Process
1.Collection of Relevant information about the disease under
surveillance
Collection of routine reporting of cases and deaths recorded at health centers,
dispensaries, and hospitals
Epidemiological Investigations: investigating and reporting cases more than
usual
Sentinal centers: are hospitals, health centers which are identified for collecting
information for selected cases
