How Web 2.0 has Revolutionized Web Design Presented and written by GURMEET SINGH GHATORA What is Web Design and Web 2.0 How was web designing like in the web 1.0 era Examples of How Web 1.0 sites were designed How is web designing like in today's web 2.0 era Examples of How Web 2.0 sites are designed What does Web 2.0 means for web designers
Firstly What is Web Design and Web 2.0 Web design is the design or designing of a Web page, Website or Web application. The term generally refers to the graphical and technical side of Web development using images, JavaScript, CSS and XML. Web 2.0 is a term popularized by Tim O’Reilly. It is an expression which was used for the first time in 2004 and referred to the second generation of Internet. The main characteristics of new era in Internet is connected with its constant development and delivering services tailored to the needs of each user. This refers to a perceived second-generation of Web-based services—such as social networking sites, wikis and communication tools Ref: http://germworks.net/blog/2007/02/11/web-jargon-explained
How was Web Designing like in the Web 1.0 era Web 1.0 was all about making the internet for people. In 1994, Yahoo and Amazon had only just launched and most websites were text-based, Google and eBay had yet to appear. Ref: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4061093.stm Ref: http :// www.useit.com - Jakob’s website In the 90’s, websites had loud background images and "email me" mailboxes with letters going in and out in an endless loop. The reason why web design was so bad was due to lack of knowledge. As Sir Francis said himself, ‘ Knowledge is power’. Only a few people knew how to build a good website back Then. But even then authorities like Jakob Nielsen started critically evaluating their studies of web user behavior. Most of the designers in this era used simple Hyper Text Markup Language to design their websites (like Yahoo - 1994) to view information not considering the aesthetical features to make the site look good. There weren't many web technologies around that time to enable them to do this, so web designers were limited.
Examples of Web 1.0 Web sites - McDonalds This is the www.mcdonals.com website in 1996, 11 years ago. This is the home page, where the user clicks to view website as a adult or kid. Here shows the website viewed as adult. Very simple and you can see how bad the design is. Ref: http://www.msu.edu/~karjalae/internet96.htm
This is the www.google.com website on Dec 02, 1998 . 9 years ago Another example of Web 1.0 Web site - Google This is the actual page of Google in 1998. Its very simple and used tables has a form input field to sign up for newsletter every month.
Examples of Web 1.0 Web sites - Yahoo This is the www.yahoo.com website in Oct 17, 1996, 11 years ago. Ref: http://www.msu.edu This is the home page of yahoo. You can see how simple it is with text, bullet lists and graphics and a huge used of space.
How is web designing like in today's web 2.0 era Web 2.0 is making the internet better for companies and web designers play an important role in this development. Web designers have to use a new combination of technologies to revitalize and enhance web features – JavaScript, JavaScript Object notation, Ajax – Asynchronous JavaScript + XML, these are the new web technologies and they are being used substantially across the World Wide Web. For visual designers its not jus about creating designed web pages but to use XML technologies to enhance features and functions on a website – A form is enhanced with java script – click on a field and it changes colours, click on something that gives me some sort of usability cue to show how something is done while on the same page.
How is web designing like in today's web 2.0 era 2 Let’s take Flickr for example. Ajax is used throughout the site. This allows a means of communicating with a server without refreshing the current page. Today in web 2.0, web designers have to choose the best option for a given task. Flickr allows you to: Update many parts of a document, Ajax will do the job well. Retrieving data from another source, JSON coding is the only current option. One of the more common ingredients would probably be use of the AJAX programming technique — a technique that generally speaking adds an element of real-time interactivity to Web pages that might otherwise be very static. Ref: http://www.cyop.net/web-design/90s-web-design-a-nostalgic-look-back.php Google's Gmail e-mail service, for example, uses AJAX to keep your view of the inbox updated as new mail arrives with out having to refresh the entire Web page. This Involved complex web programming and will only work using accurate syntax coding.
Examples of Web 2.0 Web sites - YouTube This is the www.youtube.com website today and was first appeared on April 28 th 2005, 2 years ago. Ref: http://www.youtube.com You Tube is a place for people to engage in new ways with video by sharing, commenting on, and viewing videos. YouTube originally started as a personal video sharing service, and has grown into an entertainment destination with people watching more than 70 million videos on the site daily. Ref: http://www.allthingsweb2.com/mtree/VIDEO_2.0/YouTube/details/
Examples of Web 2.0 Web sites – Myspace This is the www.myspace.com website today. Ref: http://www.myspace.com Myspace has gone beyond being just a social site and has now become a social platform where companies form around the sole purpose of developing widgets to use on Myspace . That’s power that any site would love to have.
So what does Web 2.0 means for web designers For web designers it doesn’t matter what web 2.0 is and what people say about It. What does matter is to focus on their job, seek to understand the business, economical and social issues. To educate themselves on hot technologies like XML and know what are the fuzz words. What do they need to know about it and how can they help in their goal as web designers and for their users and customers. Ref: http://www.cyop.net/web-design/90s-web-design-a-nostalgic-look-back.php Technology and design for the web are changing dramatically and quickly, Their jobs require constant learning, Designers have to accept change, embrace it and love it in the web 2.0 design industry. If not, people are miserable and cannot handle change. Most web designer today look for organic inspiration, at other media i.e. magazines, interactive media, textures colours, interactive design and not just other websites to get their inspirations. Their main Objective is to have an ongoing acceptance that they will always be learning if they want to stay on top. Ref: http://www.archive.org/web/web.php
