Arthur GUINNESS
Story of an irish man, between beer and philanthropism
L3 FLE - Anglais - Julien Macquart
History
Arthur Guiness is born in 1725 in
Celbridge, Ireland.
As he was 27, his godfather, Arthur
Price, Archbishop of Cashel, bequeathed
him £100 in his will. 3 years later, Arthur
decided to invest the whole money in a
brewery at LexLip, 17 km far from
Dublin.
In 1761, he married Olivia Whitmore,
and they had 21 children, of whom only
10 survived to maturity !

History (2)
In 1759, Arthur Guinness opened his own
brewery in Dublin, at St-James Gate.
In this brewery were brewed the first casks of
what was intended to become one of the best
known symbols of Ireland.
A. Guiness had to be very optimist, because of
the english beers which were mostly imported
in Ireland. But the inimitable taste of the
« Black » assured him the success.

The Guinness brand never lacked
imagination, and the ads for this
famous beer is an illustration,
thanks to John Gilroy who wrote
the first ones. Since, Guinness has
written its history using creative
ads, like horses in the sea and
virtual messages.

In 1959, to celebrate the 200th
birthday of the creation of the first
Guinness brewery, 150 000 bottles
have been thrown to the sea, each
one containing a message. More than
60 years later, those bottles still arrive
on foreign coasts…

Philanthropism
The Guinness family was irish protestant,
but Arthur grew up going to church. Then he
was a devout Christian and shared Jesus’
care for the weak and poor.
He heard John Wesley preach and lived his
message : « Earn all you can, save all you
can, give all you can ».
He gave money to the poor, served on hospital boards,
and sought to live a simple life despite being quite
wealthy. The legacy Guinness left is still felt today. In
2009, Guinness & Co. established the Arthur Guinness
Fund (AGF), which offers people opportunities to help
their communities.

Anecdotes
Did you know
that… ?
The harp, symbol of the
Ireland, is a trademark of
Guinness. As the
Government wanted to
use it, it had to put it
upside down.
The famous « Record
Guinness Book » is
related to Arthur
Guinness : all began
with a discussion about
the fastest bird in the
world.

Anecdotes (2)
The picture you can see as a background is the
lease Arthur Guinness signed as he created his
first bewery in 1759. What is more unusual is
that this lease has been signed for … 9 000
years !
The monthlty rent was £45.
We don’t know if it was
reviewed since 1759…
