Graphs and analysis of music
questionnaire and answers
Introduction
I conducted a questionnaire and handed it out to 26 people to find out
their opinions on music magazines. I deliberately choose people who
were under 25 as I knew I wanted to create a magazine targeted at a
younger audience.
The questionnaire covered musical taste, price range, editorial content
and frequency of publication. All this information will help me focus
on the areas to concentrate on when producing my magazine so it is
successful and targets the audience I have chosen .
A question that was included in the questionnaire was ‘ What is your
favourite music magazine? ‘. The results couldn’t be put in a graph
but they did give me some indication. The answers included the
magazines Rolling Stone, NME, Q and Kerrang. From looking at these
magazines which seem to be the most popular I can get some
inspiration and guidance.
What gender are you?
male
female
The group who filled out the
questionaire were almost
50% male, 50% female but
with sligtly more male. By
using these results from the
questionaire, I hope my
magazine will appeal to both
males and females.
How old are you?
16-20
21-25
The age range was two
thirds teenagers to young
adults and one third early
twenties. This means the
results will be more useful if
I aim my magazine at a
teenage audience.

indie pop rock dubstep reggae
I deliberately choose five
genres that are mainly listened
to by under 25s as that was
roughly my target audience.
The genres Indie and Reggae
were the most popular out of
the five which gave me a good
indication of how I should
balance what was in the
magazine.
Indie and reggae are the more
alternative genres which
encouraged me to make the
magazine to exclusively main
stream.

This question was more specific
to the dubstep genre as I
thought i wanted to include a
dubstep artist on the front cover
or include in the contents page.
The majority choose the two
most main stream artists, so
although I wanted to make a
less main stream magazine I
still wanted to attract the biggest
number of readers.

£3.50 £4.25 £4.65 £5.00
From the results it was
clear that if I wanted to
attract a younger
audience I couldn’t go
over £3.50 as that would
exclude half the potential
readers. This confirms
that price would be a very
significant factor for a
magazine if it wanted to
be successful.
Which set of editorial pillars in the contents
page would attract you the most?
0 2 4 6 8 10 12
Fashion- Music - Festivals - Gigs
Features - Gossip - World affairs
Upcoming Artist - Fashion - Sex
When people were
asked about editorial
pillars fashion, music,
festivals and gigs came
up to be the most
successful. This result
was backed up by the
next question
If a magazine updated when and where to buy tickets for concerts would
you be more likely to go?
Yes
No
Maybe
Following on from the
previous question, this
confirmed that information
about festivals and gigs is
an important factor for
teenage readers.
It doesn’t show on the
graph but the majority of
people who said yes were
from the teenage age group
and the people who said no
were older.
How often would you buy the magazine?

Everyday Weekly Monthly
In this graph it
clearly showed that
people didn’t think it
was necessary to
buy a magazine
everyday or every
week. This is
because there
wouldn’t be enough
new information to
justify a whole
magazine.

I decide to include a question about fonts in my questionnaire to
give me a rough idea of what fonts immediately attract people. I
am going to use these results for my influence on what font to
pick for the front cover of my music magazine.
