Energy use in the European Union is distributed among electricity (27%), heat (39%), and transport (34%). Hydrogen can be used as an energy carrier and is produced from water and carbon monoxide through two reactions - the water gas shift reaction which produces more hydrogen and carbon dioxide, and the methanation reaction which produces methane and water that can be recycled.
