8. A big irony is that the people who build these
luxurious spaces and townships for us are
themselves living in poor and dangerous
conditions!
There are more than 28 million construction
workers in India at present.
They are destined to live in slums. The
surroundings are totally unhygienic. There are no
proper facilities for drainage, toilet, potable water,
electricity, recreation etc.
8
9. Majority construction laborers are living in Tin
sheet (71.5%), Rubber sheet shed (17.8%) and
Huts (10.7)
A majority percentage of laborers (66.0%) are
living in self-constructed temporary sheds near by
construction sites.
These sheds are weak and unhygienic (especially
during the monsoons) and could prove hazardous
since they allow all the particulate matter and
other pollutants of the construction site to easily
enter the house. 9

19. My dream is to design a simple and
economical prefabricated home which could
be produced on a larger scale for construction
workers.
My design would focus on modularity, space
restrictions, sturdiness and ease of assembly/
disassembly.
This would improve the living conditions of the
workers, thereby having an effect on the
quality of the work output they produce.
19
20. This idea has the potential to break milestones and
make a revolution.
This idea has the potential for transforming lives.
It can give better homes to a million construction
workers.
It could be a ray of hope for 20 million people in
India who truly deserve a better life.
It could be a major part of the Rural Development
program of the Indian government.
20
21. These are homes that
are constructed in
modules and can be
assembled and
disassembled according
to the users requirement.
After disassembling
them, they can be
transported to the new
place where the user
shifts and re-assembled
there using simple
fixtures like nuts and
bolts.
These houses would
provide decent, hygienic
living conditions for
construction workers.
It is just a one time
investment. Once these
houses are constructed
and allotted to each
worker, he can use it for
the rest of his life,
wherever he shifts
according to the new
project on a new site.
21
24. Even from the
perspective of the
construction company
it would be an
excellent investment.
A batch of
workers could be
allotted with
certain number of
prefab homes.
These homes
could be
repeatedly used
by the workers
wherever they
shift on a new
construction site.
24
25. The design would be simple using only minimal
material like aluminium sheets and particle
boards that are already available in the market.
Each prefabricated house would be a simple
design of 1 room (at the max 2 rooms) which
would accommodate a family of 4.
This would help restrict the cost of each house to
₹1,00,000-1,50,000.
25
26. My dream for Godrej is to become
a pioneer of this design which
could get quick recognition with an
established name like Godrej
associated with it.
Godrej Construction and Godrej
Interio could together come up
with this concept which could soon
expand to a nationwide practice,
considering the innumerable
advantages that it has to offer.
26
How Godrej could
help make a
difference?
