This letter from Patrick Kemp, the Cadillac Brand Manager, thanks David Lipinski for his contributions to the success of the new DeVille launch. The letter discusses how Cadillac's luxury leadership slipped in 1998 but they were determined with the new DeVille. The team at Detroit/Hamtramck rallied around quality and took on the competition. They used the Olympics to demonstrate their commitment. Lipinski was part of the 25 GM teams awarded the "People Make Quality Happen" award for their work. Kemp expresses his pride in the team for facing adversity and achieving greatness with the DeVille launch.

Dear David:
Seldom does one find himself or herself in a situation to be part of something great. You sens€ it,
you feel it, you see it in your teammates' eyes, and you can almost taste it
We all experienced that this past year with the launch of the new DeVille. We saw Cadillac's long-standing
luxury volume leadership slip away in 1998. We saw the damage the German and Japanese manufacturers
were doing to us in quality and image leadership, and it hurt our pride- it hurt badly. But we weren't to
be denied. Not with the new DeVille. DeVille was Cadillac's, GM's, and America's Crown Jewel for luxury
cars and we - only we - were building it in the Motor City Capital of the World- Detroit, Michigan.
The men and women of D'Ham rallied to the war cry in the name of quality, looked the competition
square in the eye and took 'em on. I
We used the Olympics, the global superiority platform, to demonstrate our commitment to the cause.
You remember when we kicked it off with Carl Lewis lighting the ceremonial Olympic Torch, Peter
Vidmar walking across the stage on his hands, Evelyn Ashford cheering you on, and Pablo Morales tearfully
telling the story of his mother's untimely death before the Barcelona Games. We came together monthly
and celebrated the many wins you achieved, topped by the prestigious Digiglobe Award, given on the
Germans' home turf. You were one of the 25 teams in all of GM that were awarded the "People
Make Quality Happen" award, for which your personal certificate is enclosed. Display it proudly
because you deserve it. Six lucky D'Ham employees will be going to the Sydney Olympics as a result
of the lottery we held at D'Ham in June. We were joined by Grant Hill, Pablo Morales, Evelyn Ashford,
Bob Mathias, and many Olympic hopefuls in celebrating this key event and moment of celebration.
Through it all we achieved greahess. In my 25 years at GM, I have never been prouder and more honored
to work with a team as strong and focused as the men and women of D'Ham. I want to personally thank
you for allowing me to be part of your team. We did it through focus and perseverance. We took on
the odds and won in the face of adversity. Cherish this moment. Pause and reflect. You did it!
Congratulations.
Your Teammate,
k Ka-"Pat Kemp
