Why Data Science?
Baby steps into DS
Masters - Research Project and Master Thesis
Research Project - Automatic
detection of topics from tweets for
a product
Unsupervised learning- K Means
Clustering, LDA
Master Thesis - Automatic detection
of fake images on twitter during a
crisis situation
Supervised learning - Random
Forests
Personal Data Blog
Towards the end of my Master
thesis, started writing as a way to
document my thoughts and
experiences with Data Science.
Maintained a personal blog earlier
which hardly had readers.
First article gets picked by
Towards Data Science.
I experiment with data and write
how I went about the process. This
can be helpful for a lot of people.
Masters done. Now what?

experience”

Applying to jobs
Apply and wait for the
dreaded rejection email!
Apply and wait? No, hustle!
Eventually, I got 4 offers!
Multi-channel
approach
Multiple offers from 4 different
channels
1. Job portal
2. Blog posts + personal projects
3. References
4. LinkedIn
Some more strategies...
(that have worked for others)
Github
● Home for all your
personal projects
● Make sure to have a
Readme file describing
your project
● Try to make it as easy
as possible for someone
to try it out (perhaps
structure it like a
package)
Stackoverflow
● Lot of people ask basic
questions on
stackoverflow
● Might be a good way to
test your knowledge
● Once you get enough
reputation
(stackoverflow points),
you might be approached
by some employers.
Kaggle and Hackathons
● Participate in Kaggle
competitions, a position
in the top 1% is likely
to get you noticed.
● Have heard of a few
people get jobs based on
their Kaggle
performances.
● Takes some time though,
you have to perform
consistently over
competitions.
Meetups and Online Communities
● Attend meetups (like the
one I organise) to
network with the people
in the space.
● Join online communities
(we have one on
telegram). Some people
share job opportunities
through these channels
and you could be the
first one to get to know
of them!
“And, when you want
something, all the
universe conspires in
helping you to achieve
it.”
- Paulo Coelho
Thanks for
listening!
