“Good afternoon Ms. Pao, how can I help you?”
“Not much Mr. Perkins, I have a number of concerns I would like to raise.”
“Concerns! It is always concerns when it comes to you Ms. Pao. What is it this time?”
It was clear that the tone in Mr. Perkins’ voice had completely changed from a genuine tone to an irritated one. It was clear that Ms. Pao was not one to visit Mr. Perkins’ office for an issue that would otherwise be solved at the lower levels of authority at the company. It was additionally clear that there had been a situation of unrest across the firm. Ms. Pao was not one to go straight to the C.E.O. for anything she did not feel right about which clearly implied that her efforts at the lower levels had not succeeded or the matter had too much weight for them to handle. It was as well not the first time Mr. Perkins was getting a visit from Ms. Pao and he could therefore make quite an easy guess of her concern.
“Nothing new Mr. Perkins. It is a version of the normal concerns I present, only that a different occurrence is involved.”
“Alright, what occurrence Ms. Pao? Go ahead. Describe it”
Mr. Perkins’ voice was now showing anger in addition to the irritation. Ms. Pao could hear the change in his voice and understood too well what it meant for her. She did not however feel scared of the change as she had been in a similar face off before. She was as well not one lady to give in to a change of mood so easily that she would give up her intended conversation with her boss.
“Mmmmhhh... I have had complains regarding my treatment by the superiors across the firm and in many a times, I do not come to you. to earn me a promotion. Contrary to that, I was denied the credit
to my achievement and was additionally not included in the
board of directors. The board of directors only chose male
employees, save for a female secretary of board and this raises a
concern of where we women lie in this firm.”
“Everyone in this firm lies in their own place Ms. Pao, except
for you. I think the firm has had enough of your accusations and
it’s time you to find another firm where you will feel
recognized and appreciated.”
“Bu….”
“No but, my decision is final Ms. Pao. The firm will only
tolerate people who feel comfortable with the working
environment around here, and you are clearly not one of those
people…”
“This is unfair, and am sure a court of law would rule in my
favor.”
Ms. Pao leaves Mr. Perkins office seemingly upset. On her way
to her office she keeps thinking to herself, “why can’t people
treat us women like we are part of the world, why do they treat
us like we do not make any contribution to this world! The
discriminations and suppressions just never seem to stop.” She

We are as brilliant and smart as Men
“It was the most unbelievable thing that had ever happened to
me all through my career. I had never imagined I could possibly
face a situation as humiliating or heartbreaking as the one I was
facing at the moment.”
There was great pain in her words although she was giving a
narration on an ordeal that had taken place a couple of years
before. Ms. Keri Sleeman was saying the words at a United
States court in support of the passing of the Paycheck Fairness
Act in the year 2014 in support of an equal pay for all people.
In explaining her support she gave the gathering her painful
experience when she realized that she was receiving less salary
than the junior employees she supervised at a company that was
involved in designing, building as well as installing systems for
laser welding.
“The company I was working for was forced to bankruptcy and
we had to report to court to be awarded our respective final
paychecks by the company. I had been hired for over 5 years at
the time of bankruptcy and the company stated my salary adding
that it did not negotiate salary rates. During the process, I had a
chance to look at our claims only to realize that the workers I
supervised earned more than me. They had more claims than I
had in two weeks.”
Ms. Sleeman sounded very devastated by the memories of her
encounter with what she termed as gender wage discrimination
and everyone in the room could feel the passion she had in
herself to fight for equal pay for all people.
“Women on our own cannot close the gender pay gap and we
therefore need an Act as well as a policy to enact laws to
regulate the practice of oppressing women by paying them less
salaries than their male counterparts at work.”
Unfair
“I am one of the happiest people in the world right now.”
Ms. Peggy Young said when she was asked about how she felt
having her lawsuit decided in her favor. Having faced an unfair
4. situation at her job, Ms. Young had filed a case against her
employer. Her employer denied her a workload adjustment on
requesting it following her doctor’s instructions during her
pregnancy. Ms. Young presented her request to the company
authority who denied her a reduced workload.
“Instead of granting me my request for reduced workload, the
company put me on unpaid leave. It was the most devastating
moment of my entire life, in and out of the job. I had seen male
employees being granted requests regarding workload reduction
due to health conditions. With these I thought the company
would be able to grant my work load reduction with no problem.
By putting me on an unpaid leave I felt the company
discriminated me and treated me cruelly as well. If at all it had
to put me on a leave, the company would have paid me like it
paid all other workers who were faced by a situations like
mine.”
“I did not necessarily want to win the case, but greatly wanted
to have the firm realize that what they did to me was not fair, In
addition, I wished the lawsuit could give the society a better
view of how they are supposed to treat us women mainly with
great equity with every other person in the society. We should
not just be denied opportunities, chances and rights just because
we are women. It is greatly unfair and heartbreaking. We should
be treated like we are people who have rights and who need fair
treatment as well.”
