4th Annual Dodgeball Tournament
Dodge, Duck and Dive in Memory of Alec Torchon
Channel your inner competitive nature and challenge your friends to get out of IV
and onto the courts for the 4th Annual Dodgeball Tournament in Memory of Alec Torchon!
Dive past flying balls, perfect your aim towards your opponents, and drive your team to
victory on March 5th at Robertson Gym.
UCSB Recreational Sports and Life of the Party are partnering to host the
tournament as a safe and sober Saturday night alternative. Last year, the tournament
brought together over 350 people and 32 teams. In addition to the dodgeball games that are
taking place, there will be refreshments, music, raffles, prizes and a photo booth provided.
Registration will be $5 per team, with six players on each. (Sign up link down below!)
Bring a photo ID to the event at checkin time. Space is limited so sign up as soon as
possible!
Do you have the competitive drive in you? Do you have the perfect aim to win the
games? The victors of the tournament will be given the grand prize of a raft. There will also
be prizes for 2nd place, 3rd place, Best Spirit and Best Costume. So, rally your team up
with creative matching gear and mad spirit. There will also be raffles taking place
throughout the night. The opportunities for participants to take home cool swag is limitless.
“The tournament is one of my favorite events,” Recreation Student Events Director,
Brenda Lear said. “When you add the combination of dodgeball, music, food, giveaways
and team coordinated outfits, it is sure to be a good time.”
The game will run 6 vs. 6 games on three courts, playing throughout the night. Each
team will be guaranteed to play at least two games. Specifics will be reviewed before the
games start but only hits below the shoulders are allowed. Six balls will be placed in the
center line for play and if you catch an opponent’s ball before it touches the ground, it
counts as an out. The catching player is allowed to bring in a team who was previously out
back into the game.
The event was first created three years ago to honor Rec Sports employee, Alec
Torchon, who passed away as a result of mixing drugs and alcohol. Like previous years,
Alec’s father, Ric, will kick off the tournament with a short introductory speech in honor of
his late son. For the first time, Alec’s mother will also be present at the event.
“As a memorial event, this is the best way I know how to honor and celebrate who
Alec was and relish in his playful ways,” Lear said. “We hope to spread the message to our
students that he was just like they are, but he made a bad decision. There are hidden
dangers in prescription drugs and this can happen to anyone.”
Come out and help to not only commemorate Alec’s memory but also to raise awareness
for safe and responsible partying. It is a great way to show off your athletic feats and bond
with friends through sober fun. Put your game face on, sign up at
https://register.recreation.ucsb.edu/Course/Search.aspx or in person at the Rec Sports
office, and see you on the courts!
