The author takes a summer job working on a biodynamic farm in Germany. He is introduced to the head gardener, Fabian, who runs the large farm almost single-handedly. The author finds the physical work rewarding but struggles with the isolation and lack of community. He comes to admire Fabian's deep connection to the plants and land despite his rough exterior. In the end, the author realizes he prefers a smaller-scale approach to gardening and takes some seeds from the farm to remember his experience.
