As part of our series on Gold Hard Hat winners, we speak to Ganesh Dongare, one of our winners from
BG India.
Ganesh Dongare works for one of our contractors on the Tapti platform. Talking about his experience of HSSE
at BG Group, he says “I’ve always been impressed with the safety culture at BG Group, ever since I began
working on the Tapti brownfield shutdown in January 2007.
Delivering the business safely
Ganesh recalls the incident that changed his attitude to safety: “I vividly remember my first day. We were
managing shutdown tie-in on the cellar deck of Tapti Platform. It was my job to watch the 12” flange opening,
standing below scaffolding where other members of the team were working. I was standing at a safe distance, but a five pound hammer slipped
from one of the rigger’s hands and hit the platform close to me. After the near miss, which was reported to the OIM, I resolved to make safety the
top priority for every team that I work in. It really made me realise how easily a safety incident can occur, even when the right working practices are
in place”.
“Before joining BG India, I had worked with another Indian construction company based in the oil & gas sector and operating both onshore and
offshore. In that company, the main focus was on delivery, with little attention paid to safety or asset integrity. I was impressed by the BG Group
lifesavers illustrations and the commitment to safety throughout the team, it set BG Group apart from the start for me”.
Shared commitment leads to improved safety performance
He reflects on how he has helped to share his safety commitment with colleagues: “When I was working offshore, I knew that my safety
commitment started from the moment I left my home to drive to work. I made an effort to work on the “power” driving life saver before I began my
journey each day”.
“On the platform, each day begins with a BBS meeting and ends with safety observations of activities during the day. Many times, we would change
our operating procedure to adjust our work plan to take account of specific risks.
“Throughout my time at BG Group, I’ve found it’s really important to tackle safety issues with a positive attitude. Negative thoughts and comments
only serve to undermine people and to discourage them from the right thinking and behaviours”.
“I’ve worked with the entire offshore team to try to encourage everyone to treat safety positively, particularly to intervene in a positive and friendly
way on their colleagues and friends. Inevitably, there are a few people who use safety as an excuse for not doing the job properly, so I took it upon
myself personally to try to encourage a positive attitude and to work with everyone to overcome their inhibitions or concerns. In several situations I
have developed job-specific risk assessments, and these have helped to improve our production and efficiency, in particular I have developed
OICC intervention check sheets for all frontline supervisors (attached)”.

Reflecting on his Gold Hard Hat, Ganesh adds: “My gold hard hat award reflects the whole team’s achievements, not just what I’ve done. We’ve
been supported by the outstanding HSSE environment that has been fostered by the management team in BG India, and it’s that framework which

In early February, the R.V. Ocean Stalwart tied up in Montevideo
harbour, Uruguay. She had just completed a magnetotelluric survey
carried out by the SCRIPPS Institute of Oceanography to map rocks
beneath the sea. The campaign was sponsored by BG Group.
The four week survey had run without incident. During this time, the
SCRIPPS team managed 176 deployments and 174 data recoveries -
a record . The campaign’s success is testament to close working
between the Emerging Assets Technical Team, Geophysical
Operations, C&P and Legal, amongst others across BG Group, all
supported by our Uruguayan office. More
