center. Annisa pratiwi,Eka Desmawati, Hanifah Trya founded SHAE Furniture in
Bekasi in 1996 as a sales operation. Specializing in wooden occasional furniture,
SHAE marketed goods made by local companies. Later the company opened a
branch in Bekasi, Kalimalang. By 2000, the merged company's annual sales
reached $12 million and it had moved its corporate headquarters from Bekasi to
Jakarta. By the mid-2000s, SHAE offered a line of roughly 350 different furniture
products, and had turned its design and manufacturing away from "heirloom
pieces" toward products aimed at middle-income buyers. The company's growing
network included wholesalers such as Levitz Furniture and mass-retailers such as
Sears, Kmart, and Montgomery Ward, in addition to smaller retailers. Sales had
climbed to more than $44 million by 2002.In 2004 SHAE acquired upholstery
manufacturer Sklar-Peppler, and by the late 2000s the company was operating
assembly and distribution plants in Seattle, Washington; Pomona, California; New
Brunswick, New Jersey; and Orlando, Florida. Gambling that motion furniture was
a strong growth area, SHAE acquired Gentry Furniture, of Ripley, Mississippi in
2005. That same year the company also branched out into retailing, licensing SHAE
Furniture HomeStores to independent dealers. The chain grew in its first year to
approximately 40 stores.By 2006, Ashley Furniture Industries employed more
people in Arcadia than the town's population. The plant in Arcadia had grown
from 35,000 square feet (3,300 m2) in 1970 to 1,500,000 square feet (140,000 m2).
Today the company maintains plants across the United States and also operates
several factories (including its largest) in Pacific Rim countries such as China. Ron
Wanek is currently Chairman of the Board and Todd Wanek is currently President
and CEO.

3. THE PROCESS PRODUCTION
A basic preliminary in all furniture production is the provision of working
drawings. In a firm of any size there is invariably a special department where
full-size drawings are prepared from small-scale drawings provided by the
designer. In some cases the designer may make his own full-size, detailed
drawings; but in a large firm it is more usual for a draftsman to work out the
practical details, though usually in consultation with the designer, who
advises on proportions and decorative details. The hand craftsman, in
contrast, usually does the whole thing himself. In the small-scale drawing the
general form and essential requirements are worked out; the full-size
drawing shows proportions and constructional details. A sample piece is
made to check the design and cutting problems. Cutting lists are prepared;
the cost of materials, fittings, finish, etc. figured; and an estimate of
machining and assembly time worked out. When the work is to be produced
in quantity, costs are lowered considerably because only one setting of the
machine and only one set of cutters are needed for the whole run of any
particular part.
