Welcome to the nation’s capital just as we absorb the news of the newly elected leaders of the USA as
President and Congress! The timing is extraordinary. We are celebrating an auspicious anniversary:
the 70th of the Fulbright Program which began in the ashes of World War II with exchanges to former
combatant nations to rebuild the world on the basis of education for peace and understanding. During
the conference, we have the chance to learn from our colleagues in the Fulbright Program how we can
continue to engage in a world filled with unrelenting crises all these years later—and how to share the story.
Senator Fulbright’s words are as relevant today as when he wrote them in 1987:
Welcome to the 40th Anniversary Conference of
The Fulbright Association
“We may be mature, but we are newly young and open to
the challenges ahead. Based on the bi-lateral agreements
of our government with over 70 nations and Public Affairs
offices in another 70 undergirding the many layers of the
Fulbright Program, we come from deep and solid support
for engaging with the peoples of the globe made smaller
by technology but facing similar needs for understanding
beyond ideology and for shared research and teaching to
solvedeephumanproblems.”
Attendees at our conference this year include scholars
and researchers presenting current work, recently
returned young alumni, lifetime members who
have returned every year since the founding of the
alumni association, international Commission Heads,
Chapter leaders from across the country, planners
of new initiatives for international understanding,
and officials whose work in public office exemplifies
the Fulbright ideal. Members who are creating new
pathwaysforpeace,filmmakers,entrepreneurs,artists,
and more will fill our days and our minds with ideas,
energy and ways we can continue to be responsible
internationalists.
We look forward to you joining the discussion, sharing
your narrative, and networking with colleagues and
friends from around the globe.
Welcome!

At Fulbright, we are strong believers in the power of communication. In a world
where it is becoming easier to communicate, we encourage you to continue
conversations started here, back home. Inside your welcome packet, you
recieved a sheet of stickers with the contact info you provided us previous
to this year's conference. It is our hope that as you make connections this
weekend, you will exchange contact stickers and use this space in the program
as a collection of eachother's information so as to simplify the process of
getting in touch following the conference to continue the conversation.

“The simple, basic purpose of the exchange program we initiated over forty years ago is to erode the
culturally rooted mistrust that sets nations against one another. Its essential aim is to encourage people
in all countries, and especially their political leaders, to stop denying others the right to their own view
of reality and to develop a new manner of thinking about how to avoid war rather than to wage it. The
exchange program is not a panacea but an avenue of hope-possibly our best hope and conceivably our only
hope-for the survival and future progress of humanity.”
Senator J. William Fulbright

1 Welcome to thenation’s capital just as we absorb the news of the newly elected leaders of the USA as President and Congress! The timing is extraordinary. We are celebrating an auspicious anniversary: the 70th of the Fulbright Program which began in the ashes of World War II with exchanges to former combatant nations to rebuild the world on the basis of education for peace and understanding. During the conference, we have the chance to learn from our colleagues in the Fulbright Program how we can continue to engage in a world filled with unrelenting crises all these years later—and how to share the story. Senator Fulbright’s words are as relevant today as when he wrote them in 1987: Welcome to the 40th Anniversary Conference of The Fulbright Association “We may be mature, but we are newly young and open to the challenges ahead. Based on the bi-lateral agreements of our government with over 70 nations and Public Affairs offices in another 70 undergirding the many layers of the Fulbright Program, we come from deep and solid support for engaging with the peoples of the globe made smaller by technology but facing similar needs for understanding beyond ideology and for shared research and teaching to solvedeephumanproblems.” Attendees at our conference this year include scholars and researchers presenting current work, recently returned young alumni, lifetime members who have returned every year since the founding of the alumni association, international Commission Heads, Chapter leaders from across the country, planners of new initiatives for international understanding, and officials whose work in public office exemplifies the Fulbright ideal. Members who are creating new pathwaysforpeace, filmmakers, entrepreneurs, artists, and more will fill our days and our minds with ideas, energy and ways we can continue to be responsible internationalists. We look forward to you joining the discussion, sharing your narrative, and networking with colleagues and friends from around the globe. Welcome!
