Fish Hatchery
A fish hatchery is a place for artificial breeding, hatching, and rearing through
the early life stages of animals—finfish and shellfish in particular.
Importance of Fish Hatchery
Hatcheries provide the seed for aquaculture and some commercial
fisheries. All kinds of fish and shellfish begin life in tanks in a hatchery. A hatchery is a mix of a laboratory and a
farm, where fish and shellfish are spawned, then hatched and cared for.
Function of Fish Hatchery
A hatchery is a facility where eggs are hatched under artificial conditions,
especially those of fish, poultry or even turtles.
Factors to be Considered in Designing
 Site Selection
 Equipment Selection
 Developing of floor plan Site Selection
 Selection of building material
 Water supply
 Water disposal system
Water supply
Types of Tanks in Fish Hatchery
 Circular Tanks
 Rectangular Tanks
Circular Tanks
Circular tanks make good culture vessels because they can provide a uniform culture environment,
can be operated under a wide range of rotational velocities to optimize fish health and condition, and can
be used to rapidly concentrate and remove settleable solids.
Rectangular Tanks
Rectangular tank for flat bottom for fishes swimming. It can use this tank from for larval
rearing , and the fish storage.
Types of Fish Hatchery
 Earthen pot hatchery
 Double-walled hatching hapa
 Floating hapa
 Tub hatchery
 Cemented cistern hatchery
 Glass jar hatchery
Planning for Hatchery Construction
Water Inlet
Inlet structures are built to control the amount of water flowing into the tank at all times. An
inlet structure may be built for a tank supplied through a feeder canal, for example by diverted stream
water, a spring outside the pond, a well or a pumped water supply.
Water Outlet
The tank outlet or drain normally has two functions:
 To remove the waste from the tank as quickly as possible
 To maintain the correct water level inside the tank
Marketing Value of Fish Hatchery
Fish hatchery very importance for marketing value
Sale fish seed to a farmers and other out wild, its very important for business point of
view.
