Transition from Anthropometry to Fingerprints
• 1903 – The Will West Case: At Kansas State Prison, two inmates named Will
West had identical facial features and anthropometric measurements, but
distinct fingerprints. This incident led to the downfall of anthropometry and
the acceptance of fingerprinting as the gold standard for personal
identification.
• 1892 – Francis Galton: Published Fingerprints, proving their uniqueness and
establishing the first classification system.
• 1896 – Sir Edward Richard Henry: Developed the Henry Classification
System, which became the foundation of modern fingerprint identification.
