An Ipsos survey of citizens of nine European Union countries finds most people hold the Greek government responsible for the ongoing debt crisis. Some 88% say the Greek government is a great deal, or a fair amount, to blame for the crisis –rising to 94% among German respondents. The German government was mentioned by 46%, attracting less blame than the Greek populace, the IMF and the European Commission overall.

The Greek government-debt crisis was the sovereign debt crisis faced by Greece in the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2007–08. Widely known in the country as The Crisis (Greek: Η Κρίση), it reached the populace as a series of sudden reforms and austerity measures that led to impoverishment and loss of income and property, as well as a small-scale humanitarian crisis.[6][7] In all, the Greek economy suffered the longest recession of any advanced mixed economy to date, overtaking the US Great Depression. As a result, the Greek political system has been upended, social exclusion increased, and hundreds of thousands of well-educated Greeks have left the country

The Greek government crisis (also known as the Greek depression) started in late 2009. It was the first sovereign debt crisis in the Eurozone later referred to collectively as the European debt crisis. In 2012, Greece's government had the largest sovereign debt default in history. On June 30, 2015, Greece became the first developed country to fail to make an IMF loan repayment. At that time, Greece's government had debts of €323bn.

We all know Greece is in deep trouble after defaulting on its debt to the International Monetary Fund. Many Greeks blame the austerity measures for much of the country’s continuing problems. The leftist Syriza party rode to power this year promising to renegotiate the bailout. The Greek economy is shrinking. At such times one of the tools available with government is to tinker with the currency. Unfortunately the Greeks cannot do so because they share their currency with other nations of the EURO region. Today’s lesson by Prof. Simply Simple attempts to explain you the story of ‘Greece Crisis’ using an interesting analogy.

For anyone who does not want to be reduced to a Greece- like situation, these are learning times. Be disciplined in money matters, tighten your belts Greece and its European creditors announced an agreement in Brussels on Monday that aims to resolve the country’s debt crisis and keep it in the eurozone, but that will require further budgetary belt-tightening that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras could have trouble selling back in Athens. The International Monetary Fund threatened to withdraw support for Greece’s bailout on Tuesday unless European leaders agree to substantial debt relief. The Greek Parliament has scheduled a vote for Wednesday night on whether to approve central elements of the deal.

PAKISTAN’S ECONOMY AND THE IMPACT OF FLOOD By Dr ISHRAT HUSAIN Pakistan had been suffering from three serious shocks even before the recent floods caused devastation to human lives, property, infrastructure and social services in the country. Pakistan was engaged in fighting the militants and terrorists since the U.S. initiated the war in Afghanistan. Forty three billions of dollars of losses have been incurred so far in the fight against terror and the country has been virtually shut out as a destination for investment, capital flows, tourism and trade. Second was the demand side shock caused by the decline in the purchasing power of the majority of Pakistanis due to stagnating income, double-digit inflation and growing unemployment for the past three years. Third, the synchronized recession in the global economy hasn’t helped either in stimulating domestic economy.

To better understand the current sovereign debt crisis in Greece, a longer view is warranted. In this paper presented at the 2nd Bank of Greece workshop on the economies of Eastern European and Mediterranean countries, the Bank of Greece covers a 2 decade history of Greece leading to current financial crisis prevailing in the country and looming large over Europe and the future of EU. The 20 year period 1989-2009 is bounded by two major fiscal crises in Greece: the 1989-1993 crisis, and the ongoing crisis. In both crises deficits exceeded 15% of GDP. In between, Greece entered the Economic and Monetary Union and adopted the Euro. To facilitate discussion the 20 year period will be divided into two parts: the 1989-1999 period, and the 2000-2009 period. In the final part of the presentation, solutions and remedies to overcome the crisis are suggested.
