This study investigated the neural basis of language switching in late Japanese-English bilinguals using fMRI. The experiment presented bilingual subjects with Japanese or English words and asked them to think in either the same or different language. Multi-voxel pattern analysis was able to accurately classify, above chance, whether subjects switched languages or not based on brain activation patterns. Searchlight analysis detected regions in the prefrontal cortex and parietal lobe that differentiated the language conditions, consistent with past research. This was the first study to simultaneously differentiate various language switching contrasts in the same experiment.
